A sandstorm unearths an ancient ruin near the Temple of Silence. When Sethos goes to investigate, he’s stunned to find a living divine creation within, as beautiful as he is damaged.
Preview Excerpt: Sethos sets Kuni down on a cracked marble bench, wondering if the heat will be too much for him. But Kuni doesn’t complain when Sethos has him dip his foot into the water to test it. So he helps him undress. “Dinner will be ready soon,” he says. His hand lingers at the base of Kuni’s neck where the Electro symbol has been stamped into his skin. “I don’t need to eat,” Kuni rejoins. His answer doesn’t surprise Sethos; though human in shape and form, something about his body is distinctly off. As he stands nude, preparing to lower himself into the bath, Sethos can’t keep his eyes from running all along the length of him. His limbs invite particular scrutiny; at the junction of each, there’s something like a joint that might be found on a doll, allowing movement. It isn’t anything like Al-Ahmar’s ancient technology. And yet there seems to be something of the divine lingering within him.

These are intriguing scents from faraway lands, but he hopes that someday soon, they will add the aromas of jungle mist and cacahuatl and volcanic ash. The proprietor narrows his eyes over the top of his horn-rimmed glasses, but a withering look from Jade is enough to force his head back down to the diamond he’s grading. He’s taken the measure of her, but the old fool has no inkling as to the true value of her latest acquisition. She watches Kakavasha from the vantage point of a stage draped in red velvet within a semicircle of floor-to-ceiling mirrors. He dressed himself this morning with the clothes she left for him: tan work slacks, a vertical-striped button-down in white and pale blue, and an IPC windbreaker. He put on the scarf, too, as she suspected he would, even though the day is warm. When she had him groomed yesterday, she suggested tattooing over his neck—make it look like a choice, his own brazen and incomprehensible fashion statement. He hadn’t had an answer for her then.

The wanderer has memories of the Shogun slaying the serpent god and splitting the island in twain. It must have been thousands of years ago, but the bones have not yet been claimed by erosion. Perhaps that is from where the decay emanates.

He had long wondered why the jewels and precious metals from the automatons and mechanisms stolen from aristocrats never turned up on the black market. After narrowing down suspects to the young barkeep at Leblanc and learning of his true trade as a mechanist, the pieces came together; the jewels were of no use and too hot to fence, and the metals served a much more practical purpose. Ren turns around, and there’s a trace of mischief in his smile. “Oh, it’s you. I never caught your name.” “Crow,” Goro says a little too forcefully. “May I ask what you’re working on?” He doesn’t particularly care and only half pays attention as Ren attempts to explain his device in layman’s terms. Beneath all his layers of shirt and coat and apron and capelet, there’s no way to tell if he’s concealing wings. Instead, Goro finds himself gazing at the muscles in Ren’s forearms, watching them expand and contract as he works. There’s something beautiful in the simplicity of it.

Water funnels downward in cones, and she understands how stalactites are born. Against the base of an impossible stalagmite, a woman in a butterfly dress leans her weight, arms crossed. Her expression is one of indifference though blood clouds the air before them. Lumine turns. The blood is Aether’s, as she suspected. He’s suspended again but not yet impaled. Still, he bleeds. The wounds are small but multitudinous, cleanly made but not consistent. They were deliberately inflicted, but their placement was not intentional. And they fog the air—the water—with blood.
