The slow expansion of the Marbled Fritillary (braamparelmoer, Brenthis daphne) in NL has surprised me, in B and D it easily moves 10-20km per year. Even in de SE the density is still relatively low. Apparently the quality of the habitat in NL is not good enough to move further north.

De wintervlinders zijn er weer. Die komen pas als vlinder uit de pop als het koud wordt en zijn de komende weken nog te zien. Als je in je koplampen lichte vlindertjes ziet fladderen zijn het die wintervlinders. Vrouwtjes hebben geen vleugels!! www.vlinderstichting.nl/vlinders/ove...

De wintervlinders zijn er weer. Die komen pas als vlinder uit de pop als het koud wordt en zijn de komende weken nog te zien. Als je in je koplampen lichte vlindertjes ziet fladderen zijn het die wintervlinders. Vrouwtjes hebben geen vleugels!! www.vlinderstichting.nl/vlinders/ove...

Now the 2025 field season for butterflies has come to an end, it is a good moment to look back at the great work of the recorders of Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects. Almost 400,000 butterflies counted in 2025 on 1372 locations, 8,5 million since 1990 on 212,327 km. Thanks for all hard work!

Maas moet nog even wachten op extra water. Regen 20-22/8 valt, op klein deel Frankrijk na, geheel buiten stroomgebied. Pas regen van orkaan Erin kan ook Maas wat water opleveren. Dat betekent dat afvoer pas vanaf 28/8 kan toenemen. Tot die tijd moet Maas het doen met zeer lage 25-30m3/s.

The 'June-dip' was at the end of May this year (red line) on Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects. Graph shows mean number per count per week per 1000m transect. Meadow Brown (M jurtina, bruin zandoogje) is emerging and the Pieris-whites are starting their second gen of this year.

The Dutch Grassland Butterfly indicator (www.clo.nl/indicatoren/...) shows a decline of more than 70%. It will be hard to achieve an increasing trend in 2030, as required in art 11 in the Nature Restoration Regulation (eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-conten...).

Waar je op een zomerse dag in 1992 nog 100 dagvlinders zag, waren dat er in 2024 nog maar 44. Shifting baselines gaan hard.
Maar er is krachtig herstel mogelijk als we NU investeren in ecosysteemherstel. Dat levert bovendien ook veel economische baten op. Doen!

Maar er is krachtig herstel mogelijk als we NU investeren in ecosysteemherstel. Dat levert bovendien ook veel economische baten op. Doen!

Early spring Pieris mannii at times are inconspicuous, with upperside pattern vaguely grey & less pronounced than in summer. The discal spot is still rather large & fills the space in between the veins. Underside is heavily dusted. From today, male near Ghent. Best to underexpose to see the details.
