The team developed a data-driven method to automatically classify lion vocalisations, discovering 2 roar types (full-throated and a newly identified intermediary roar). The analysis used simple acoustic features, achieving up to 95% accuracy in identifying individual lions.

The team have returned inspired for future research following the IUCN World Conservation Congress (Abu Dhabi), Oppenheimer Research Conference (South Africa), Managing Wildlife in Large Landscapes Conference (USA) and the Applied Conservation Technology Congress (Vietnam).

The change makes it easier to kill wolves despite them being vital for healthy ecosystems and supporting biodiversity.

Researchers call for wolves to be strictly protected, with a conservation focus on coexistence.
