Although, as I mentioned, this is exactly part of the justification that is *still* peddled by proponents of privatisation. Even in the documentary I pointed at Michael Howard says exactly this.

Precisely.

Ah, I see.
I think.

I’m so confused. 😵‍💫

Boo.

I shall have a squint next time I see a multipack but I’m pretty sure those bars are even smaller. I bought 4 pack of Extra Strong Mints not long ago and the rolls were definitely shorter than the standard single pack.

I have also noticed that multipack confectionery have smaller individual items too.

What was the stock that used to run out of Paddington serving the local stations on that line through Southall, Hanwell, etc? They had a feel of a diesel coach which had rail wheels fitted and ISTR they used to obviously change gear too,

Just listening to Michael Howard made clear the issue; privatisation does NOT improve things through competition but it does allow profiteering from assets the government had no business selling off.

Watch the documentary on the Camelford water poisonings and consider what "privatisation" had (and has) to do with it.

Pretty much, although keeping it in a toolbox, etc or in some sensible work situation should be fine.
December 2, 2025 at 3:38 PM
BUT the context is important; out in the woods, fine. Peeling an apple at the park, fine. In your pocket at the pub, not fine. waving around, not fine. We do not have bears or pumas so a Bowie knife is not permitted, unless you happen to be in the woods hunting rabbits, for example.
December 2, 2025 at 2:30 PM
The OP indicated that owning most knives was outright prohibited, which is not true here in the UK. There are *some* types which are not permitted to own, even at home, but these are quite specific. A "Swiss army knife" of the familiar type, provided the blade is <3" would generally be fine.
December 2, 2025 at 2:28 PM
So this is sort of true. A locking knife (or fixed blade) would not be generally permitted without a "section 139" "good reason" for having it; a worker in the course of their work using a utility knife, for example, should be fine. Taking that knife to the pub on the way home, not so much.

If you find yourself in the water and in need of assistance you would do well to exercise caution if the US Navy come by...

I can quite imagine that an excellent way to run a punctual rail system is to remove pesky passengers entirely but I'm not sure quite how useful that would be.
December 2, 2025 at 10:37 AM
There are few knife types in the UK which are “outright illegal” and you may carry a folding knife (not locking) with a blade of less than 3” length with no requirement for a “good reason.”

Absolutely, a game-changing piece of kit. I have one for my electric chair to keep me warm while I watch the neighbourhood from the window...
December 2, 2025 at 9:33 AM
Also I suspect the energy density of eg: diesel fuel in comparison to hydrogen is a bit of a sticking point too.
December 2, 2025 at 9:29 AM
I guess the issue is that electrification requires a lot of infrastructure investment and building, whereas a different type of train doesn't so much.
December 2, 2025 at 9:26 AM
Surely that is a G-window?
December 2, 2025 at 9:23 AM
Nice shot. ;-) Not all of them are windows, mind.

Some 3200ISO film is actually 800 stock that is just marked up as 3200.
