I know it doesn't make the heartbreak feel any better, Canada, but your guys still achieved more than 28 other teams and played their absolute hearts out. No one should hang their head about their play. The world champs managed to cling on by their fingernails and it took everything to beat 'em.

Oh I think we actually agree! He was that guy in so many lineups. But that was the problem: by moving from team to team so much, he never built up a legacy/didn’t leave an impression. He missed out on the “fame” part in hall of fame. At least now the committee will look at his body of work though.

And I truly believe the reason sports exist is to make people emotional! If they didn’t, we wouldn’t play or watch. When a team inspires a whole region it’s a beautiful thing.

I remember talking about Sheffield with some other Yankees reporters when he retired. My take then was: “Somehow Sheffield has hall of fame numbers, but not a hall of fame career.”

There’s nothing like a city gripped with pennant fever. I loved the footage of Jays fans dancing in the street after a win… then dutifully scurrying to the curb when the light changed… and then running back into the street to dance more the second it was clear. 😄
