Same! I just played the fourth movement for my boyfriend the other day cause that was my favorite in chamber orchestra 🥰 so bombastic and powerful!

Idk that that’s true. I’m a Children’s librarian. There are kids who *COULD* read it and understand. But the content is not appropriate for most of them.

You’re allegedly mad about people’s politics, but if you leave it at movie one, then it ends with the witch flying off to combat fascism and…nothing changes cause that’s the end. The second movie is SHOWING her doing the work. It’s not “bad”. It’s not as poppy as the first one. That’s it.
November 24, 2025 at 2:50 PM
The latest one, which is act 2 of a 2 act play? 🧐 which everyone knew going into it? Meaning you need to have seen BOTH to get the full story. Also, doesn’t address the “people’s politics” comment you made. The second one is even more explicit that it’s antifascist.

What “really” happened in a fictional book? 💀

This isn’t based on Baum’s books. It’s based on Maguire’s retelling from the witch’s POV.
November 24, 2025 at 1:05 AM
The reviews that say it’s “bad” are mad because it’s darker than the first movie and because they expect an in-movie plot refresher for the first one. No other movie does that. They assume you saw the first one and move on. I’ve seen it. If you like the musical, you’ll be fine.

You know Wicked is also antifascist, right? Like…explicitly the point is that the Wizard is fascist in this story?

The books are a completely different thing for a completely different audience that aims to do a completely different thing. I’m tired of seeing this take. And the books are not “perfect for kids”. I should know as a kid who read it as 12 💀

You’re comparing a country of 330 mil people spread out over a large area to a country of 6.5 mil the size of South Carolina. Hope this helps.

It’s not “unwilling” so much as “unable” for many people. Out healthcare is tied to our jobs. Most adults are one missed paycheck or health crisis away from homelessness. People are doing what they can do.
November 23, 2025 at 11:02 PM
All this to say, yeah, I think you have a superiority complex about the weird Oz politics book and think it makes you interesting to rail against something because it’s “popular”. Just makes you sound contrary for the sake of being contrary.
November 23, 2025 at 6:17 AM
Additionally, that “polished art” that “everyone can enjoy” is how we got Wicked in the first place 🙄 the original Oz books are a long series with meandering plots that didn’t get included in the movie. But people saw the movie and then created other things.
November 23, 2025 at 6:15 AM
PLENTY of money has been put into his again, multi-book, very thick series about Oz politics. So much so that he’s cashing in on the movie’s success by writing more of that story.
November 23, 2025 at 6:13 AM
Also “I wish more money was put into the original art”….a bestselling, FOUR BOOK series that spawned a bestselling musical that spawned a bestselling movie. Pretty sure Gregory Maguire isn’t complaining.

He wrote a new prequel about Elphaba’s childhood AND released a graphic novel of the book.

So sure, you’re allowed that opinion and you’re allowed to “bitch on the Internet.”

And I’m allowed to come along and tell you why that opinion sounds ill-informed and doesn’t take into consideration that there’s a change in audience.

“To someone who felt similarly” (again, we’ve established they didn’t actually give their opinion besides the marketing)

Your opinion is complaining about side plots in a thick, FOUR BOOK series didn’t make it to a short, family-friendly art form.
November 23, 2025 at 6:09 AM
It’s an art form concerned with telling the MAIN points of the story in a limited amount of time, not a door stopper book that can take meandering paths about her mother and father having a polycule when she was a baby 🙄
November 23, 2025 at 6:07 AM
No one, including “indie theaters”, is going to put that show on. It isn’t commercially viable. Your comment is like complaining that because it doesn’t hit every page of the 1,000 page Hamilton biography that the musical is “bland”.
November 23, 2025 at 6:06 AM
They didn’t actually talk about their opinion of the movie or show. They said it was “overpromoted.” Which, considering they did brand deals with everyone under the sun, is a valid criticism.
November 23, 2025 at 6:05 AM
To be perfectly blunt, I think your opinion is wrong and doesn’t take factors aside from “I want to feel superior about the book” into account. You could also just…not watch the movie or show and move on with life instead of harping on something you don’t like.
November 21, 2025 at 6:52 PM
Hint: I was trying to politely say I think expecting those things of Broadway meant you hadn’t considered that change in audience from book to stage. It’s not actually a mystery.

I’m aware we can disagree but again…no one is going to stage “Oz: orgies & religion the musical”

I’m just baffled at what part of you looked at them adapting this book for a stage show thought they were going to keep weird diatribes about religion and politics in it when they barely make sense in the text? 🧐
