Moths, occasionally birds. Still a grumpy dad, still hoping to mellow with age
Unfortunately in my clear out of photos I appear to have deleted the moth associated with this dissection, and whilst it rings a bell I can’t pin it down. End of May 2025 SE Hants, any help appreciated #teammoth

NFG Micros from the first 6 months of trapping in 2025, SE Hants. A combination of the most wanted, best looking and most surprising. I’ve also redone yesterday’s macro collage with the correct moth in the top right. Technically there’s also a micro in it, but it’s an ‘honorary’ macro 🤔 #teammoth

NFG Macros from the first 6 months of trapping in 2025, SE Hants. A combination of the most wanted, best looking and most surprising. A welcome distraction from sorting photos, 800 deleted today, still another 9000ish to go 🫣😬 #teammoth

Well the Irish entertainer, the dreaded tennis double bagel was avoided. 4/4 in SE Hants. 1 each of December Moth, Mottled Umber, Rusty Dot and an Acleris notana/ferrugana. Not bad considering the weather, and that the trap only went out at 10pm #teammoth

Anyone tried trapping in snow, it’s a large white reflective surface after all? I mean it’s mid November, snow? FFS! #teammoth

An amazing evening spent listening to @profaliceroberts.bsky.social and her Domination talk. A brilliant take on the fall of one empire, and rise of another, not something I’d ever considered, I must get the book! Equally impressive was finishing the presenting with that cough, I hope it gets better

Tried my new walking boots today, Grisport Quatro Black Hiking Boot, not expensive and worked with orthotics. Used straight out of the box and didn’t break them in. 4.5 miles cross country including boggy areas. Good - very comfy and waterproof up to the laces Bad - a little heavy #birdinggear

New Forest bird survey today near Matley Wood. I popped in for the Great Grey Shrike ✔️ and was lucky enough to connect with both Crossbill ✔️and Redpoll ✔️ flocks whilst walking (all year ticks). The survey was pretty poor except for a mahoosive mixed finch and thrush flock #hantsbirds

128/24 in SE Hants. Joined in with the major fall of P vitrealis with 2 😆, 7th and 8th records. Nothing new, but a different Golden Twin-spot, 8 RDP, 3 Turnip and a Blair’s mocha for the migrants. 2 Sprawler, Brick and a load of Epirrita were best of along with some Acleris #teammoth #migrantmothuk

The Blastobasis trapped on the 12th has been confirmed as vitatta after gen det, only the second garden record and unsurprisingly NFY #teammoth
November 14, 2025 at 3:26 PM
135/21 in SE Hants. 83 Epiritta agg 🤪
Migrants; 6 RDP, Blair’s Mocha, Silver Y, Golden Twin-spot, 3 Turnip. Others; 8 Feathered Thorn, 3 MdJ and a fresh Satellite the best of the rest. I haven’t been able to search the garden yet for lurkers due to rain! #teammoth #migrantmothuk

A late entrant to the trap count was Angle Shades. Another possible leaf miner on Beech, Phyllonorycter maestingella which if correct is another NFG #teammoth
November 13, 2025 at 3:14 PM
74/19 in SE Hants. Similar to last night, Diamond Back, RDP, Blair’s Mocha, 3 Turnip the probable migrants. Lesser YU was on the late side and a record 4 Sprawler was nice. Expired Nov Moth male next to trap. An unidentified Blastobasis could be best of rest along with 3 MdJ #teammoth #migrantmothuk

More leafmines. I think the first two are Ectoedemia subbimaculella on Turkey Oak and Oak. Bucculatrix sp on Oak for the third? Last one on Oak, no idea, a mine and the leaf fold present. Any help or confirmation appreciated #teammoth

As the good lady is chucking all the leaves over the fence this weekend I thought I’d try some leaf mining. I think all 4 on beech are Stigmella tityrella. Confirmation or help appreciated #teammoth

Is anyone interested in acquiring a Golden Twin-spot (Chrysodeixis chalcites) pheromone lure? I’m looking into the cost and need to know numbers before ordering #teammoth
November 12, 2025 at 1:07 PM
Bit surprised at the numbers 95/17 in SE Hants. 55 Epiritta agg was the most common + a garden record. Palpita vitrealis was NFY and only the 6th garden record. 2 RDP, Blair’s Mocha and a Turnip for the migrants. 2 Sprawler and 2 Grey Shoulder Knot were the best of the rest #teammoth #migrantmothuk

One for the moth dissection crew. I keep flipping between November and Pale November Moth for this preparation. I originally had it down as dilutata, but after clean up and staining I’m now wondering if it’s christyi? Any help appreciated #teammoth

Goods numbers in wet conditions last night in SE Hants. 67/23 with some micros still in the fridge. Migrants (ha!) 3 RDP, 3 Turnip, 1 Blair’s Mocha. Best of rest, 1 Merv, 1 Sprawler and a late Vine’s Rustic. Traps away for a few day after 6 nights on the bounce #teammoth
November 8, 2025 at 10:45 AM
Bag of nails last night in SE Hants. 42/14, 23 of them November Moth agg not even a good looking one to dull the pain. 1 RDP for migrants. Best of the rest, C. quercana and a nicely marked B. lacticolella. 2 more days left of the much anticipated migration moth fest to go 🤪😭 #teammoth
November 7, 2025 at 10:05 AM
An exact rerun of last night. A small flurry of moths then nothing, cold and clear. I can’t compete with this #teammoth
November 6, 2025 at 10:02 PM
Having poked every shrub and plant in the garden 67/27 was the trap total in SE Hants. Migrants; 1 of White point, RDP and a stunning Blair’s Mocha. Large Wainscot was a hoped for NFG. A possible NFG A. notana needs 🪓. A. hastiana and a Flying V Nov moth agg best of the rest #teammoth #migrantmothuk

Right going the full hog tonight.
2 traps ✔️
3 lures ✔️
2 groundsheets fully opened ✔️
Amyl acetate liberally spread ✔️

Surely I can get one decent migrant moth with that lot? I can’t shake the feeling that it’s going to be a dud. I might even sacrifice a nice red just to make sure 🙏🏻🙏🏻 #teammoth

Continuing the nice November Moth agg trend for the garden I found this one on the bench. Also during the check I disturbed this nicely marked LBAM from the shrubbery. Desperate times 😖 #teammoth
