40odd years later, I _still_ think about that kid in my class with a questionable home life, who in a modern school would likely be identified as neurodivergent, and the anger and force that old witch Nicholson used to hit his hand with her ruler because he scored zero on her morning quiz. Awful.

Blows my mind that as recently as my 80s schooldays an adult could physically assault a child, literally hitting their hands with a belt or a ruler- and not just get away with it, but get paid to do it, because the adult was a teacher disciplining a pupil. No wonder GenX are so messed up as adults.
