All this "new world record wind" tweets are making me dizzy.

More info on the 252 mph wind gust in Melissa. Wasn't at surface; doesn't break any record outside of dropsondes.

253 mph still world SURFACE hurricane record.

Freezing Fog showing up in PA this morning (pink double lines). Pittsburgh issued their first ever Freezing Fog Advisory (blue). However... the issuance seems to depend on NWS office so that stat may not be as impressive as it sounds. (maps in comments)

Who measured a 252-mph gust in Hurricane Melissa?? THIS GUY! (well, one just like him). A new record for a dropsonde.

(This is 1 mph below the WMO wind record from Australia in 1996 which was measured in a hurricane BUT at the surface)

Some facts about Hawaii's snow this week:

It's the 2nd event this season.

They avg ~25-30 NWS Winter advisories each year, mainly Nov.-May though earliest/latest in last 20 years is Oct. 13 & Jun. 8.

Why? Both Mauna Kea & Mauna Loa are >13,000 feet.

The cause of the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore was a misplaced wire label on the ship, which caused a bad connection & blackout. www.accuweather.com/en/weather-n... Apparently the black box also gave them a lot of trouble. NTSB stuff is complex.

Officially had some November 90s yesterday!
November 16, 2025 at 5:13 PM
It's always windy in Central PA, especially up against the slope of the mountains as Altoona & State College are. But the 1st half of November has been insane. It's been almost impossible to put out trash or rake leaves. The # of days with gusts >40 mph @ Altoona is DOUBLE any previous year!
Looking at average wind gust, this 2 week period is the windiest on record by a long shot!

Altoona has had 7 days in the past 15 with a wind gust over 40mph! 😯

Did the NWS issue their first Snowspout Warning this week? No. No such thing.

But, with 5,200 Special Marine Warnings per year, I could only find a couple more in the last 10 years that mentioned snow + waterspout. www.accuweather.com/en/weather-n...

Wow. That escalated quickly last night! If you want something that gives you a little earlier heads up that the chance for Northern Lights are increasing, try the Hp30 index instead of the K Index, which only updates every 3 hours. kp.gfz.de/en/hp30-hp60
