The system — which could easily be misused to make it harder for people to vote — already contains Americans’ data from multiple state and federal sources. The Trump admin has also discussed integrating a law enforcement database with driver’s license info from every state.

The settlement strengthens public oversight of the board’s actions ahead of the 2026 elections. “No Georgian should have to question whether they’ll be disenfranchised simply because those administering elections disagree with their views.” said Executive Director Chioma Chukwu.

Under the settlement agreement, the SEB will require that board members conduct business exclusively through official government email accounts, which can be easily searched. They must also forward board communications on personal accounts to their official emails.

We sued the SEB and Janice Johnston — an election denier in contact with other election conspiracy figures — after they refused to give us access to official emails. The following litigation raised concerns about the board’s transparency.

The records show “no plan, no foresight and no concern for the human cost of its own chaos,” our Executive Director Chioma Chukwu told the Times.
