All of this, but also, the media needed another side to balance all the coverage they gave to lunatic Republicans. They couldn't find enough lunatic elected Democrats, so they had to stretch into the world of campus activism to satisfy their crazies-on-both-sides imperative.

Yeah pretty embarrassing for the author to assume Grok hallucinated the functionalist position. The position isn't that the Holocaust was an accident, it's that it was the result of bureaucrats trying to please Hitler.
