In Canada, Indigenous Peoples' Homelands encompass vast areas vital to climate stability, biodiversity, and carbon storage. Strengthening Indigenous rights, governance & access to finance can enhance conservation outcomes, advance reconciliation & position Canada as a global leader (3/4)

The recent Global Study on Indigenous Peoples’ Climate Contributions, compiling over 700 Indigenous-led or Indigenous-partnered initiatives, identified six insights informing actions to advance Indigenous leadership-led climate solutions (2/4)

We're studying how underwater noise impacts marine life & calling for strong action in Canada’s Ocean Noise Strategy. As leaders gather at #COP30, protecting the Arctic’s remaining quiet waters must be part of our global biodiversity & climate goals🐋

As leaders meet at #COP30, changing wildfire regimes should be part of the climate conversation. Not just as disasters to fight, but as systems to understand. (7/7)

We have to better understand the role of fire in a rapidly changing world. Healthy fire cycles are part of healthy ecosystems. But they’re now being pushed beyond their limits. (6/7)

Even species adapted to live with fire, like cavity-nesting birds, are feeling the strain as mature habitat disappears. (5/7)

Research published in 2024 showed that Canada's 2023 wildfires released levels of carbon comparable to the annual fossil fuel emissions of large nations, with only India, China and the USA releasing more carbon per year. (4/7)

But climate change is shifting that balance. Fires are burning larger, hotter, and in places that rarely burned before. (3/7)

Fire has always been part of Canada’s boreal forest. It renews habitats, releases seeds, and creates space for new growth that many species depend upon 🌱(2/7)

When peatlands are drained or disturbed, the stored carbon is released - and there's no getting it back! (4/5)

A quarter of those climate-critical peatlands are in Canada. Canada's peatlands alone store more carbon than all the trees of the Amazon rainforest 🍃 (3/5)

Despite covering only 3% of the globe's surface, peatlands contain over a quarter of all terrestrial carbon (2/5)
