Mamdani, with 97% of the vote in, has more votes than all the other candidates combined

Zohran has more votes than Cuomo and Sliwa combined, and won every borough except Staten Island

Second to last update of the night for me. This is about as decisive a victory as Mamdani could have. With 97% of the vote in, he leads Cuomo 50% to 42%

Zohran just passed 1 million votes

With the race called for Zohran, lets check in on how its going, the only borough Cuomo won a majority in is Staten Island. Mamdani won everywhere else

A peak behind the Guardian election work. Since the data and graphics team in the US is pretty small (3 people), we gotta be scrappy. We focused on one race - NYC Mayor - and powered our entire reporting rig on ImportHTML and VLOOKUPS

The turnout for the NYC mayors race is bonkers

The City reports that we've already blown past the total votes cast in the last 4 mayors races. New Yorkers hunger for democracy

What is a hold room? These are small facilities, meant to hold people for short periods of time while they are processed into ICE detention. Concrete rooms, no beds, no privacy for the bathroom.

Footage from the NYC hold room made the rounds a few months ago:
October 30, 2025 at 1:26 PM
ICE officials knew that people were being held long past the 12 hour limit, so they issued a memo rescinding the restriction. But even with the rule change, people are being held in these rooms past the _new_ limit
October 30, 2025 at 1:24 PM
ICE issued a memo in June, increasing max time in hold rooms from 12 hours to 3 days. After the memo, the avg time in detention increased nearly 600% at many hold rooms

The Guardian has been tracking DHS detention statistics, and we found that DHS stopped publishing any data on trans detainees as soon as the Trump admin took office

This is not true. All three have shutdown stories on their front pages. The NYT has two

Our series is based on data leaked to the Guardian US from GlobalX, the nation's largest deportation flight provider. This data has given us unprecedented insight into how deportations are affecting the more than 200,000 people that the administration has deported in the last 9 months
October 2, 2025 at 1:03 PM
A significant change under the Trump administration, though, is that number of people in Ice detention with no criminal history has been steadily increasing, and they are now make up the largest group.

This data, from Ice, directly contradicts all of the public messaging from DHS

The Guardian has been tracking immigration enforcement under Trump and the latest data came out late in the afternoon yesterday. There have now been nearly 230,000 arrests and 234,000 deportations
September 26, 2025 at 12:07 PM
We're very close to crossing a significant line: People with no criminal history are soon to be the largest group arrested by Ice and booked into detention. This is a significant change from the past, where the government prioritized detaining people with criminal histories.

DHS released new detention management stats last night, check out the top line numbers on @us.theguardian.com:

Since the inauguration:
210,000 arrests
216,000 deportations
59,000 currently in Ice detention
September 12, 2025 at 12:11 PM
New detention management stats came out today as well, so we've updated our page:
August 29, 2025 at 6:06 PM
New detention management stats are up. In the last 14 days, there have been

- 15,000 more arrests
- 1,850 more people are being held in detention
- 17,000 more deportations
August 29, 2025 at 6:04 PM
Why are we doing this? The government is making a lot of claims about what Ice is doing, claims that are often easily disproven by their own data, like this chart showing that Ice is increasingly arresting and detaining people with no criminal history
