New lake sturgeon work out investigating transcriptional shifts in the gill during early development

mRNA changes associated with histone modifications, DNA methylation, and apoptosis were conserved across both populations, as well as population-specific processes

Many hatcheries use tumbling jars to incubate sturgeon embryos by constantly turning them while they develop

But by allowing embryos to stick to a substrate, like they would in the wild, we can dramatically decrease larval stress and mortality

Lake sturgeon are a gregarious fish, meaning they like to hang out in groups. Sturgeon that are exposed to a stressor, like heat, in isolation were more stressed than fish that were exposed together, a phenomenon called social buffering.

For this #sturgeonsaturday here is a juvenile lake sturgeon in a respirometer to measure metabolic rates following the stimulation of an immune response

We found that once the immune response was activated there were impacts on metabolic scope for atleast 7 days

A lake sturgeon cuddle puddle for this #sturgeonsaturday

Developing sturgeon will gather together after they hatch and hide in surrounding rocky substrate, in tanks we provided substrate as bioballs so they don’t get crushed!!

Awesome to see the Lake Sturgeon representation on #25DaysofFishmas !!

In Manitoba I worked with different populations to evaluate management practices, their thermal tolerance, and immune responses in an ever warming world

Recently out in Science Advances, we compiled and reviewed the evidence surrounding pathogens from salmon aquaculture and their risk to wild Pacific salmon in British Columbia. We highlight pathogen impacts in relation to climate change, evolution & management

A juvenile white sturgeon from some of our work on the effects of warming rate on their thermal tolerance

White sturgeon acclimate to rising temperatures very rapidly, with strong increases in thermal tolerance (+5C) in just 5 days

Out in Global Change Biology,

We conducted a meta-analysis to assess the thermal tolerance and adaptive capacity of North American Sturgeons.

While sturgeons are incredibly thermally plastic, increasing temperatures limit their physiological capacity and likely recruitment🧪🐠🐡🌎

Joining in on the #sturgeonsaturday fun with a photo from @madisonearhart.bsky.social’s recent sampling trip. We collected a variety of minimally invasive samples to look at stress in wild white sturgeon from the Fraser River in BC! 🧪🐟🌎🐠

Hi everyone! I’m a postdoc with the University of British Columbia and the Pacific Salmon Foundation and my research focuses on the impacts of cumulative stressors on the early marine survival of Pacific Salmon 🐟🐠🧪
