I saw this wonderful El Greco painting, The Apparition of the Virgin Mary to St Lawrence, in Monforte de Lemos, Galicia. There it was, unannounced, with its extraordinary look of spiritual awe and wonder on the saint’s face. St Lawrence is carrying the grid on which he was tortured, as always
