On 16th February 1943, Reverend Father S. Teggart said a Solemn Requiem as funeral masses were held for the young victims of a Valentine's Day tragedy in Co. Tyrone.

"Die Wasserwerke"

Yesterday's "Blitz Map" kicked up some good discussion including the old 'the Luftwaffe bombed the waterworks by mistake thinking it was the docks'.

The waterworks were ALWAYS a primary target for the Luftwaffe. Take out the water supply and the city will burn.

Published by the OKW in 1940, this map shows the city of Belfast in great detail. Annotations single out military and industrial sites, many of which would sustain damage during the following year's Belfast Blitz.

Staff Sergeant Vincent P. Filippone (12188487) served in 3rd Combat Crew Replacement Center, 8th United States Army Air Force during the Second World War. He was born on 29th January 1923 in Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.

Back in 2022, I had the privilege of talking with Auschwitz survivor Rachel Levy who found a post-war safe haven in Northern Ireland. Now more than ever, it's vital to educate on the horrors of the Holocaust.

Holocaust Memorial Day reading.

Before the outbreak of war, the Northern Ireland government created a scheme to tackle the region’s chronic unemployment by offering financial support to people who could create jobs. Applications came from hundreds of Jewish people seeking to escape occupied Europe.

Burns Night is still celebrated in parts of Northern Ireland on 25th January. In wartime, traditions would continue with or without haggis.

On 15th January 1942, Convoy AT-10 departed from the eastern seaboard of the U.S.A. Unknown to most troops onboard, the destination was Northern Ireland.

On 14th January 1945, 4 German Prisoners of War staged an escape from the Elmfield Camp in Gilford, Co. Down. Their freedom was short-lived as they went on the run towards Tandragee and Poyntzpass.

On 6th January 1942, a manslaughter trial took place in Portadown, Co. Armagh. In the dock was a local soldier from the neighbouring town of Gilford, Co. Down.
