College professor in organizational behavior and ethics. I do research on how people think about deviance (including why they disagree about what deviance is).
And because why not, the quote is “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety,” and it was about a niche tax dispute. Is your ability to make veiled death threats via song lyrics on an Internet forum an essential liberty?

We’re not talking federal free speech protections. We’re talking moderation policy on what amounts to an Internet forum. If you want less moderation, 4chan and x are there to welcome you. I’d prefer Bluesky did not turn into those.

Definitely seems dicey to set a precedent that “things worded as death threats are now okay, as long as they’re a reference to something.” A 72 hour ban isn’t worth bickering over. I’d much prefer to have a moderation system on here with too many false positives than too many false negatives.

In that case, perhaps they simply recoiled at your pronunciation.

Related to martinis: I find they almost always look terrible on film/tv, but the new show Pluribus had a refreshingly gorgeous one in episode 2 (a chilled glass! A beautiful lemon twist!). Loved that someone cared enough to get the details right.

But really, I’m more inclined to appreciate a brazen literary device than something that’s clearly there, but hidden just enough to appear clever. Getting big and bold with meaning can be done in a way that still leaves plenty open for discussion and interpretation.

One of my favorite games as a child, Boppin, was made by a trans woman in the early 90’s. People are very selective about what parts of video game history they tune into.

This poses a slight challenge for me when I’m asked for pronouns. The correct answer is “literally anything,” but it’s hard to explain that in a way that comes across as acting in good faith. I’m perfectly fine with he/him, but dislike identifying with it, as it feels both inaccurate and reductive.
