Great meeting tonight with residents of Loring Green - talking about real ways to partner with our schools and support our immigrant neighbors. This is what Ward 7 and Minneapolis are all about.

Multiple candlelight vigils taking place across the Ward and city tonight to lament the loss of Alex Pretti and cry out for justice. Our light will shine in the darkness and the darkness will not overcome it.

A plea for peace in a day of horror:

Like you, I’ve watched today’s events unfold with absolute horror. I’ve seen the videos, was on scene before an unlawful assembly was declared, and heard the pleas for both peace and accountability from state and local leaders.
January 24, 2026 at 11:10 PM
I want to add my voice in pleading for peace. Just a short while ago all of us on council received a request for aid from the city’s EOC asking that we do whatever we can to reinforce the message that peace &order must be maintained particularly in the vicinity of 26th &Nicollet.
January 24, 2026 at 11:08 PM
Bad as things are, they can & will get worse if we don’t keep the peace.

Don’t get me wrong: I respect the need for a full & impartial investigation into the killing of Alex Pretti, but the videos suggest it was nothing short of an extrajudicial killing by a cadre of ICE thugs.
January 24, 2026 at 11:07 PM
All of us are feeling righteous anger, but it needs to be channeled into continued peace and unity.
January 24, 2026 at 11:05 PM
We cannot fail in this respect. Recent statements from the White House confirm that the federal government has no intention of withdrawing anyone, and Stephen Miller recently used the word “insurrection.”
January 24, 2026 at 11:04 PM
We know President Trump has already threatened the Insurrection Act as means to deploy active-duty military into a major American city, &we are at high risk of becoming a test case. That’s much harder to do if we remain peaceful as thousands upon thousands did yesterday downtown.
January 24, 2026 at 11:04 PM
What do we do with our anger?

Keep whistling, keep recording, keep subsidizing those in need. Reach out to your contacts in other states and tell them what’s happening in Minnesota.
January 24, 2026 at 11:03 PM
As we saw yesterday, Minnesota is speaking with one voice, but we need support from all corners of the country for this occupation to end.
January 24, 2026 at 11:02 PM
Additionally, move outside to “Light Up the Night” at 7pm. Bring a flashlight or candle to the street outside your home to be together and reject violence in our streets. (7/8)
January 24, 2026 at 11:00 PM
Let’s keep the peace today, and keep up our active, peaceful resistance tomorrow. We shall overcome.

In peace,

Elizabeth Shaffer
Councilmember, Ward 7

With dangerous temperatures expected over the next several days, protect yourself from the extreme cold. Wear warm layers, cover head, hands and feet, take breaks indoors and watch for early signs of hypothermia and frostbite.

I was interviewed this morning on CNN’s Situation Room about Trump’s readiness to send 1,500 troops to Minneapolis.

My response ⬇️

”This is not about immigration, it’s political.”

“We need to get ICE out of our city.”

Dr. Martin Luther King reminds us:
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

As our neighbors face fear and uncertainty right now, Minneapolis chooses light and love. This is how we honor Dr. King together.

Many in our community are asking how they can stand with our neighbors.

This non-partisan Constitutional Observer training offers practical guidance on how to observe and document immigration enforcement activity.
