Buried in the Woolf chapter is my project on machine learning and quotation marks, my @scholarslab.bsky.social fellowship project that helped bounce me into a DH career.

The shorthand I use to describe it was often Joyce + record collecting, Hughes + jazz performances and poetry readings, Woolf + sound recording devices. The major takeaway was that sound recordings are social devices that enable new community formations, and literary recordings are no different.

The project sat at the intersection of literary studies, media history, and digital humanities and looked at the strange character, afterlives, and receptions of literary sound recordings. A common question I had with my director was "are there enough books in here to pass as a lit dissertation?
