I don’t think I’ve ever touched my subtitle settings in YouTube so their default just seems to be really inconsistent across device / app. Still happy to see superior yellow subs, though! White subs made parts of a recent cinema screening of GQuuuuuuX literally unreadable.

Works for me on an iPhone. Strangely, the display is different in the web browser versus in the YouTube app itself.
Browser has thicker text and with a drop shadow, app is thinner with a semitransparent box.
