We fund the performance, commissioning or recording of music by professional British/Irish composers active in the last 100 years; and projects that create developmental opportunities for composers, or promote awareness of British/Irish music.

Vaughan Williams lived at The White Gates in Dorking from 1929 until 1953, and composed many of his works there.

He was a key figure in the founding and building of Dorking Halls, which opened in 1931, and is where this statue stands.

The friendship between composers Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst was a deep, lifelong bond that began at the Royal College of Music around 1895.

They became each other's most valued critics, discussing their work and taking "field days" together to critique compositions.

Established in 2022, the VWF supports composers and work which furthers knowledge of the lives and music of Ralph and Ursula Vaughan Williams.

Hugh Cobbe, a founder trustee of the VWF, has stepped down after 25 years of close connections to all things RVW.

Hugh was formerly Head of Music Collections at the British Library and a close friend of Ursula Vaughan Williams.

We warmly thank him for his generosity & leadership👏

The VWF has three annual deadlines for general funding. The next are:

🎵 Monday, January 5, 2026 (for work taking place from April 2026 onwards)
🎵 Friday, May 1, 2026
🎵 Thursday, September 3, 2026

Each funding round is for projects to be delivered a minimum of three months after that deadline.

Symphony no.4 in F minor was first performed in April 1935 by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Boult. This letter was later dated by Boult as ‘Autumn 1944’; he did conduct the symphony again on 14 February 1945 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, in Bedford.

At the age of 41, Ralph Vaughan Williams volunteered as an ambulance driver in WWI.

He saw the horror of the war firsthand, and his experiences haunted the music he created subsequently.
