Doomsday Book is one of my first recommendations for people wanting to read literary science fiction. Somebody else can recommend Hyperion. They will get their eventually.

Anything edited by the Vandermeers is gold.

Dreamsnake was my introduction to the genre after reading her Trek novels as a tween. My mom was a huge science fiction fan and mostly read the women authors from the 70s and 80s, so that's what was around. I could never get into most of the old men after that. Y'all wrote actual characters.

My mom has always been a huge science fiction fan but with rare exceptions (such as yourself) only reads the women.

I'm so glad I started out reading her old Le Guinn and McCaffery paperbacks and not Azmov and Heinlein.

I can't get excited about Dune because so many other people have taken the main ideas made better books.

Grass by Sherri Tepper should have been a major motion picture by now.

In the mass media era, elections are about casting someone to play a part. She was miscast.

She's from California, practically Hawaii which is basically China.

A candidate from California is unelectable.

Obama successfully rebranded himself as from Chicago and was still exotic.

Beshier is the best bet but he needs a language coach to sound more folksy, a rescue mutt, and more Jesus.

The creation of DHS was post 9/11 overreaction. Ditch the whole thing. Direct the savings on a cabinet level agency dealing with internet crime and commerce, AI and Crypto regulation, etc.

They don't see themselves as leaders of people, for the most part. People are looking for them to fill the role once held by union leaders and faith leaders. That's not their job.

I think it's more that if they were to explain that there's nothing left that they can do, people start looking at direct action.

People want instant gratification from the federal courts. That's not how it works.
