At this stage I just want it all to end. I have been so stressed and sad and I think hearing "nothing can be done" will make me sadder but at least I will stop this anxiety I've been under since the drive broke.

I will only know next week if they can recover anything or not, but the lab has my drive now. I have been feeling sick to my stomach due to all the stress but I think I'm also kinda. Just accepting that nothing can be done anymore.

The pay will always be shit regardless of the size of the zoo. You will always end up having to work with animals you aren't in love with. Be realistic.

But if you love zookeeping, keep going. You will get there. You will have a chance eventually. I did, and as stressed as I am 24/7, I love my job

So many have this idea they must work at a large zoo with only the animals they specifically want. My advise: throw that idea out of the window. Large zoos are complex, difficult to navigate and most likely you will be working with animals you don't love. That's the reality of the industry.

I became a zookeeper BC the zoo I applied for was very small and at the time the employees didn't have specific roles such as Curator or Conservation officer or anything like that. So if you do want to work in the industry, my advise is: try smaller zoos with a small team first.

A good CV means nothing in this industry. It doesn't matter what people say. You become a keeper out of luck, nepotism, or because a zoo doesn't have many applications at the time.

Another bit of lore! A veterinarian wanting to become a zookeeper was seen by everyone interviewing me (Senior Zookeeper/biologists/other vets) as "this person wants my job" in this industry. Because I was overqualified, I was a threat. I was rejected from 10 zoos, despite having a great CV.

I gave up vet med and wanted to became a zookeeper, but with my CV nobody took me seriously because I was overqualified. So I decided to study biology and take my bachelor's and pretend I didn't have a Veterinary degree.

Eventually became a zookeeper and then zoo curator/animal manager.
