United Videogame Workers-CWA Statement on Proposed Electronic Arts Buyout October 15, 2025 NATIONWIDE — The following statement is from United Videogame Workers-CWA Local 9433. The recently proposed acquisition of Electronic Arts (EA) by the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia and private equity firms, including Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners, will further concentrate power and wealth into the hands of a few gatekeepers while doing nothing to address the concerns of players and workers. EA is not a struggling company. With annual revenues reaching $7.5 billion and $1 billion in profit each year, EA is one of the largest video game developers and publishers in the world. EA’s success has been entirely driven by tens of thousands of EA workers whose creativity, skill, and innovation made EA worth buying in the first place. Yet we, the very people who will be jeopardized as a result of this deal, were not represented at all when this buyout was negotiated or discussed. We are particularly worried about the future of our studios that are arbitrarily deemed ‘less profitable’ but whose contributions to the video game industry define EA’s reputation. Since 2022, an estimated 40,000 video game workers have already lost their jobs due to mass layoffs at AAA and indie studios alike. As reported in Game Developer, this deal will result in EA having to finance nearly $20 billion in debt—who will be spared, which corners will executives cut, and what studios will be sacrificed in order for that to happen? If jobs are lost or studios are closed due to this deal, that would be a choice, not a necessity, made to pad investors’ pockets—not to strengthen the company. Every time private equity or billionaire investors take a studio private, workers lose visibility, transparency, and power. Unfortunately, it really isn't that surprising: these robber barons are going to lay off workers in the places with the highest costs of living (and thus labor), highest healthcare costs, and scant labor laws. That describes North America perfectly.

It's past time we fight back.
Speaking to The Game Business, Satvat said that "over 70%, and in some years 75%, of the layoffs have been in North America". He noted that while "overall employment in the industry has actually increased" since before the pandemic, developers working in the US have been facing noticeable cuts in their workforce – particularly in AAA studios.

In the last two weeks, we have seen a wave of censorship sweep across online retailers, particularly Steam and Itch.io. This is because of demands from payment processors as well as sex-negative activist groups like Collective Shout (originally reported by journalist Ana Valens, and then censored by VICE’s parent company). UVW affirms that sex and sexuality belong in games. Games are works of art, created by workers who should be free to express themselves. It's important to encourage a healthy and critical discourse about the media we consume. One vocal minority cannot have the power to categorically silence creative expression, just because some sexual themes make some people uncomfortable. Sexual art is art, sex work is work. Any attempt to suppress sexual art is an attempt to suppress all art. Any attempt to deny sex workers their dignity is an attempt to deny all workers their dignity. Workers rely on platforms like Steam and itch.io to distribute their games, and it is workers who are suffering at the behest of this vocal minority. We call on the payment processors Mastercard, Visa, Stripe, and any other companies demanding compliance with this unjust action to reverse their policies and stand with the workers who have lined their pockets for years with their labor. We call on Valve and the Itch.io leadership to reverse their policies and stand with game developers. We encourage our members and the general games community to use the resources in the quoted post to contact these payment processors directly and express how strongly we object to their actions.

This past weekend, as hundreds of game workers flew into LA to attend Summer Game Fest, Immigration and Customs Enforcement terrorized the Los Angeles community, raiding neighborhoods, separating families, assaulting citizens, and detaining SEIU President David Huerta. Many of us in the game industry call Los Angeles our home, and we feel these attacks on a deep and personal level. United Videogame Workers-CWA stands in solidarity with SEIU, UNITE HERE, United Farm Workers, SAG-AFTRA, The Animation Guild, IATSE, and all our fellow unions and organizations condemning these ongoing federal raids targeting workers. We are thrilled that David has been released and echo SEIU’s calls to drop his unjust charges and for ICE to immediately end their violent raids against us and our neighbors. The United States is built on the backs of immigrant workers, documented or otherwise, and the Trump administration’s racist and violent oppression serves only to undermine our labor and strike fear in our communities. As workers of an anti-racist union; as workers with H-1B visas; as workers with immigrant families and friends and colleagues; we condemn these abhorrent acts of outright fascism and colonial subjugation. Our game industry is a deeply international one, and our art is built from cultures and perspectives that simply cannot and will not be contained by borders. UVW-CWA exists to protect all game workers across the US and Canada, regardless of immigration status, and we strive to extend that reach to all corners of the globe through connections and shared struggle. When solidarity transcends nations, no human is illegal!

We at United Videogame Workers-CWA condemn the studio closure of Cliffhanger Games by Electronic Arts. In an industry that generated over $450 billion and padded EA CEO Andrew Wilson's pockets to the tune of $25.6 million in total compensation in the year 2024, workers should not have to be subjected to this dehumanizing treatment. These hardworking families and industry veterans must now scramble to find new work during a time of increasing economic volatility, while the game that they worked hard on will never see the light of day. And for what purpose? For EA to be able to write off the cost of the studio and game production as a "business loss" on their taxes and make their stock prices go up. Making this disastrous decision following EA's previously announced RTO policies and commitment to DEI is an insult to injury to those already trying to stay afloat in the industry, particularly to the disabled, those with families, and Black and brown game workers. We as workers and the players who stand with us in solidarity deserve better and demand better.
