Thank you @ruthiesthomas.bsky.social for recommending THE HERO OF THIS BOOK by the inimitable Elizabeth McCracken - what a deep and wise joy it is! A memoir written on the aftermath of her mother's death, it is so gloriously perceptive and witty and tender. #BookSky

"Stella lounged against a cocktail cabinet whose glass frontage was engraved with the outline of a naked woman. I'm not going to be cowed, she thought. Not by nipples."
Bliss to be indoors on a rainy day reading my new favourite author. Thank you @dauntbookspub.bsky.social for this wonderful proof!

We're discussing Richard Flanagan's memoir QUESTION 7 in my 'Reading Like A Writer' book group on Thursday. Wow, it's quite a book! Can anyone think of anything remotely comparable in terms of his approach to memoir? Wildcards welcome! 📚

I am tickled by your enthusiasm - and always pleased to get recommendations!
In fact, I've checked the shelves and found this, so might well start here! (Better not start it today, I have at least 6 books on the go just now... 😂)

Don't know why this post is getting so much attention (all relative - it feels like lots of attention compared to my usual posts...). Should have added: Buy my novel! 💙📚 #ForThyGreatPain

A misty Sunday morning in October, might as well read this... Surprised the translator, Barbara J. Haveland, isn't mentioned on either the front or back cover - I thought we were over erasing translators these days? Seems not.

One of the best books I've read this year - @willhodgkinson.bsky.social's biography of Lawrence (Felt/Denim/Go-Kart Mozart), STREET-LEVEL SUPERSTAR, is an exploration of a singular man, a true artist and visionary in an age of brands and commercial pap. I 💙 u Lawrence. (He's also a nightmare 😂)

I'm starting the reading for my upcoming online book group, 'Reading Like A Writer', which kicks off on Thurs 9th Oct with Catherine Lacey's BIOGRAPHY OF X - described by the Guardian as “an impressive and enchantingly strange novel”. A few places left - details here: victoriamackenzie.net/teaching/

Reading David Constantine's translations of Hölderlin today and discovered Hölderlin's mother kept his inheritance from his father a secret his whole life. Hölderlin died a rich man but didn't know it! Oh my god, someone write me a slim devastating novel about this, please!

Among non-Irish essay writers, I love Lavinia Greenlaw's book of essays, THE VAST EXTENT @faberbooks.bsky.social - she describes them herself as 'exploded essays' and they braid art, literature, science and memoir to consider what can be seen and not seen.

Bluesky made me buy it, etc. (Yes, it probably was you @jacquiwine.bsky.social 😉) 📚😍

Just a week ago the Fife sky was full of swallows, martins and even swifts. This video from 14th August doesn't do it justice, it was TEEMING! Today - empty, a gloomy woodpigeon the only sound.

"In another country they would have been criminals, but this was America."
Another scorching sentence from Colson Whitehead. Historical fiction is always simultaneously speaking to/of the present day. #Booksky #HistFic
