A nice treat for Noah since he's here to stay. Got it for a great price. Needs some work as it's been sat for years but it's a good working base so far.

Will keep you all updated.

Hey,so I've been pretty down lately so I haven't posted often but here's an update. Ralph here will be up for sale in the next few weeks. A fleet restructure is needed for financial reasons, and a want for change. Felix Fiesta work goes on and Noah the Montego gets to stay for now.

This is great news! Certainly a motivator to keep Noah the Montego for longer.

Crazy to think Merle was just a humble, yet forgotten airport ambulance for Filton sitting at 11k miles when we bought him, and his hard work as a daily has got him up to 18k (and change) with the vast majority of that being towing miles!

What a car!

Hehe I've become a bit of a Mondeo anorak in recent years. 😅 Almost like my family had several Fords of that era; including Mondeos! Merle is our fleet's 3rd. 😂 I love a daily used Mondeo. Merle is now over 18k miles after being 11k miles when we bought him. He puts a lot of work in for the fleet!

They've also toned down the colour selection. Petrol blue for example which is one of my favourite colours from the Mondeo line up is notably absent. That was the colour of our MK1 we used to have, Mildred.
November 18, 2025 at 4:45 PM
Same year as Merle so I've had a look in my brochure, and the colour is 'Light Nordic Green.' The wheels it comes with just seem to be standard Ghia alloys. They don't seem to show lots of pictures of wheel options later on. Probably because of the MK3 replacing it the same year.

Silver lining? Milenco make a set of trims that are fairly close to the originals and are still sort of available. Perhaps I will hold off on fitting more until we have replaced the wheels with those that let us cable tie them!

I found although it does have nice features, Blaupunkt were putting the premium on it being what it is. Not on quality. The buttons were plasticky, the dial was the most wobbly I've ever seen on a head unit.

They charge for looks. The components inside them are the same as units 1/4 their price.

I won't lie, I cried when I saw this was missing when we got home. I was quite proud that I had a full set of these. Damn the original solid steel wheels with no way to cable tie them! Think I need to replace them with better wheels and hope I can find another hubcap...
November 17, 2025 at 5:40 PM
A funny day: Towing Ronald back from an event, the Sony double DIN stereo is overheating and malfunctioning, Ronald lost one of his incredibly rare hubcaps somewhere, his fridge fell apart and needed sorting, then the drain hose on the dishwasher packed in.

I hope the rest of the week is better! 😅

But it was very cool (because flip clocks just are) and I liked the fact the clock was lit by a gentle red neon bulb.
November 12, 2025 at 5:45 PM
You definitely can't hate on the space egg design language, that's for sure. I can vouch for Prinzsound lack of quality. I had a flip clock from them for a bit, but I had to give up on it because it did not get better when serviced and was built like a wet paper bag. 😅

Ever since I restored my 1971 Akai CR-80D 8 track recorder & restored my cartridges by cleaning them & replacing their felt pads, I've been listening to 8 track a lot as a background listening format. It may not be quite as high quality as cassette but it's still very good.

Take it from me: owning an Austin Montego in 2025 (or two if you're mad like me) is not a thing for the faint hearted. So much stuff is NLA and could have you waiting weeks, months or years (true story) for parts. But despite that, I still love them and they deserve saving.
November 12, 2025 at 12:57 PM
The mechs in these are EXTREMELY sensitive to not being timed correctly during disassembly or reassembly. As per the service manual, you must follow instructions on how to make sure the timing marks are in the right spot for servicing. It's pretty wild. 😅

You might say well why not use the C570R if it may work better? It's because I prefer the look of the VFD on the C570. The 'R' doesn't have a VU meter or fun spinning disc graphics and that just won't do. I will keep the 'R' regardless though. It's still a handy backup if the C570 died irreparably.
November 10, 2025 at 12:30 PM
My WX-C570R has been fully serviced. I will probably end up using it as a stand in while I electrically restore the C570. I think both want a recap and I want to do the C570 first as its tuner module makes horrendous noises on the radio setting! We shall see if this one does or not.

So, after fitting the unit to Merle, I found out A: the accessory switch on these is VERY important and B: the tuner module is malfunctioning on it. But it's totally fine otherwise!

Nevertheless, bought another unit so I have spares. But it's the 'R' variant. Still think I prefer the other display.

Well, perhaps you would find the interior of my 1987 Austin Montego a little more appealing? Or perhaps my office Hi-Fi setup including a 1971 Akai CR-80 8 track recorder? Or maybe if you really want to go back, my early 60s Bush 1/4" reel to reel recorder without a semiconductor in sight!

Demo! Also music from th same year it was made - 1997
November 6, 2025 at 1:13 PM
I did! I need to grab one at some point as I owned a Proton Saga Iswara a few years ago. 😀
November 6, 2025 at 12:36 PM
I cannot describe the pain it took me to get this stereo fixed up and installed in Merle. I also had to modify the Ford trim since Ford head units of this era apparently weren't fully double DIN! But don't worry, I didn't cut a perfect trim. This was cracked anyway.

But it looks and sounds good. 😀

Can confirm Proton in SimpleNG is great. Had so much fun photographing it in action! 😀
November 5, 2025 at 1:58 PM
Oh yeah, I am liking the SimpleNG mod for BeamNG. I can drive a car we used to own! A Proton Saga! I should get back into doing BeamNG virtual photography. This wasn't a bad practice run, though.
