I live with low vision, learn with assistive technology, study how AT & #a11y can help visually impaired college students thrive, and write all about it on Veronica With Four Eyes (veroniiiica.com)

I’ll end this thread with a graphic from Puzzle’s #AccessAlt campaign, where they turned info from my first alt text post into a shareable graphic, complete with a capybara. Take the #AltTextChallenge and make your content more accessible!

Alt text and image descriptions also help provide clarification or context about what is happening in an image, which can be helpful when discussing art. Seeing art through someone else’s eyes is so fascinating to me. veroniiiica.com/how-to-write... (9/11)

Another challenge I frequently encounter on social media is not being able to zoom in enough to read text, which can be challenging for reading things like comics. Alt text for comics makes it easier to read and follow along with panels. veroniiiica.com/how-to-write... (7/11)

Another hard-to-read format is ASCII art/emoji memes, which tend to look super distorted with large print or are unrecognizable because of decorative fonts. Adding alt text to screenshots makes it easier for me to understand what the image is supposed to convey veroniiiica.com/make-ascii-m... (6/11)

One of the main reasons why I started writing these alt text guides was because I missed the punchline on so many memes or jokes that friends would send me. Alt text can help a lot with making sense of visually cluttered and low contrast images! veroniiiica.com/how-to-write... (4/11)

On BlueSky, many gifs have auto-generated alt text, which can be edited if it doesn’t reflect the context of the gif. I also use alt text to help filter out related keywords for strobe/flashing lights. Learn strategies for writing alt text for gifs at veroniiiica.com/how-to-write... (3/11)

BlueSky supports alt text up to 2,000 characters, though alt text cannot be added/edited after posting.

Create a new post with an image/gif, select “add alt/add description” to add alt text, then select done when finished. Alt text can be added to posts with multiple images (2/11)
