Three cliques away and shrinking, on a social collision course. The Young Gun mingled conversationally onward, and the Kid mangled conversations in a flanking pattern. Subtle shots were fired on any distant criminal relative that didn’t know the barrel they were looking down when the Gun cocked her head in polite dismissal.
The Kid, by contrast, knew exactly the danger of being in her sights. What she didn’t know was what to do, because she forgot it all the second the Gun’s piercing silver irises hit her. They shook her down to her script and rewrote her role. She took the nearest chair in a hurry, but the music did not stop.
At zero cliques to impact, the Gun clicked with the Kid on contact. She said, “Well, don’t you stand out, even when seated?” A compliment for the Kid and an insult for an assassin.
The Kid swallowed both her spit and the instinct to pivot and deny. Predators do so like prey, and prey she could play. She said,

The right thing to do would have been to tell the boy that her collar was invincible, but Luma was soaring beyond such trivialities, and hushed by the idea of watching him strain. Especially for her sake. She sat bolt-straight and proper, and he got bolt cutters and pliers, and told her to stay very, very still. Anyone but Luma would have had serious doubts about putting such forces right against their fleshy, delicate neck, ready to slip the inch that separated liberation from decapitation. He said, “Do not concern,” which was rich. “I have a steady hand.” And he undid the top two buttons of his shirt. Something which Luma had great concern for, and made glances to the side for, that when combined with the flush of her cheeks made her look as nervous as anyone smiling ear to ear could.

“Wisdom would flee,” Fe said, finishing with armoring himself. “Fall into the forest. I will sacrifice myself.”

“Over this?” Viccipiter marveled.

His nobleness falling flat, he reasoned, “What is it? A life for a life,” and pulled the sheathe off his longsword.

Viccipiter folded her arms dismissively. “Yeah- they cannot arrest me. They do not have the authority.” Words which caused Fe to look as if they were spoken in alien tongue.

He looked instead to Luma, who was Luma and therefore smiling, but not in an about-to-get-arrested smile, as she was seeing the romance through the trees in this scenario. However when she saw Viccipiter’s stance, she hurriedly switched to folding her arms and acting serious.

She declared, [Neither have they the authority to protect slavers!]

Fe said, “Such is not how this works...” and began to attempt to reason unreasonably. But he was cut off by Luma, who wrote, [No sacrificing!] She pointed to the forest, sternly, and resorted to using his sworn service to command, [Flee! Now!]

But somehow, after I've gotten used to her, that interest has stayed. It's somehow permanent. Now when she does something mundane, it's still interesting. Even when she does nothing at all. I watch her sleep and my mind tells me, what a special person. She shows her flaws and it says, awesome.
