I fear not ghosts, I fear them not🫣
I say that like I’m old enough to have caught the grunge thing before it died. But I’m young enough that I was a fan of Weird Al’s “Smells Like Nirvana” before I was even a fan of Nirvana.

Screaming Trees? That just gave me sense memories of being a teenager and listening to old Sub Pop Records stuff.

I mean, most of us were very young when we first had The Emperor’s New Clothes read to us as little kids. And we understood that.

This is just a stone’s throw away from that.

From the outside looking in: 2 adults who could easily define it by talking like grown-ups but they refuse to because it makes ‘em feel young again (like teenagers) to refuse to communicate.

Sometimes only 1 is cosplaying as a teen while the other genuinely never grew up. Sometimes neither grew up.

If I was on a team, I’d want my school to realize bowl games are no consolation.

In a playoff era, these bowl games are 100% meaningless now. They are like setting up your toddler with a fake steering wheel in the car so they can pretend they get to drive too.

The president saying we should call soccer football, that the NFL and college football should have to call their sport something else? It’s like the sort of thing Republicans swore would only happen in John Kerry’s America if he beat Bush in 2004.

I think there’s a demographic of observers out there--not “casual observers,” exactly, but maybe a rung above that--who saw Warner shenanigans like burying Batgirl (or whatever that Looney Tunes movie was), and they’ve spent years now assuming anyone else buying WB would have to be an improvement.

I think all the business incorporated in Delaware but operated elsewhere are scams. If you want benefits of a particular state, you should have to actually run your business there. It’s like letting pedophiles pick which state’s age of consent applies even though they’re in a state where it’s 18.

Calling it a "circular firing squad" necessarily acknowledges that Newsom himself has been harming & shooting at progressive factions or demographics or ideals in the circle.

That's what the term means.

I realize there were legitimate reasons for having computers in schools so us kids could learn to type or use spreadsheets.

But having them there just to have us play SimCity or mess around with nonsense like Print Shop Deluxe? That was a move specifically to make us *like* computers.

We smell the stink of desperation because it feels to us like no one wants it. But kids in school apparently can't function without it.

We need to not let these companies tread water long enough to be kept afloat when the waves of AI-using schoolkids grow up to be loyal paying customers.
December 3, 2025 at 3:42 PM
A bleak thought:

According to teachers, sounds like they successfully got kids clamoring for AI by giving them a machine that does schoolwork for them.

Feels similar to companies putting PC & Macs in schools for free when I was little to groom generations of kids to grow up to be customers.

It's kinda crazy. I lived in east Tennessee for a bit (though I was in the Chattanooga area and I think this district is Knoxville). Place is so red, it's the type of deal where I'd go to vote and big chunks of my ballot were Republicans running unopposed with Dems not bothering to run anyone.
December 3, 2025 at 3:23 PM
This is very awesome & true.

But it kinda just makes me wonder if there's a Johnny Cash song this trick would work for. So NIN could attempt to hijack one of his songs the way Johnny basically owned their "Hurt" once he covered it.

They're much more likely to be killed by a "lone wolf" nut grown from their own right-wing audience who are mad at them for not being extremist enough.

That's why even people getting Kirk'ed won't make any of these maniacs dial it back.

I still think it's very nice to wish people a happy birthday verbally or with a card, and giving a gift is very nice. I just don't really relate to it when people (whose age isn't single digits anymore) pout or pitch hissy fits about others not making a sufficiently huge deal about a birthday.
December 1, 2025 at 7:18 PM
I concede that part of my grumpy take is that it feels like less of a gesture once people no longer had to make any effort at all to actually remember it themselves. Since Facebook or whatever gives them a heads-up about acquaintances' bdays like a personal assistant a chore got delegated to.
December 1, 2025 at 7:11 PM
Nevermind "birthday month/week." I kinda think plain old birthdays themselves aren't even that big a deal past a certain age.

But I get some people have huge birthday expectations based on how bdays were handled in their families growing up or in the films/shows they watched.

Presumably all of them are little kids about as tall as the yellow pole. And they don't crunch nearly as loud so she probably didn't even stop. 🤔

I don't see how she'd need a new axle from this. I wonder what else she did to need a new axle.

If he arranged for that dude to get eaten by a bear just so he could make a documentary about it years after, that would be pretty impressive planning and execution.

For a sportswriter who talks about baseball a lot, that's kind of insane.

I got Toy Story for one of my little brothers because I remember him going through a phase where he'd watch those movies over & over as a little kid. He might've dressed as Toy Story characters for a Halloween or two too.
