The Humanities Institute Announces:
Dr. Ariel Evans and Art Galleries at Black Studies have won a $15,000 Lehman Foundation Award to support their exhibition “Something Grander Still” on artist Carrie Mae Weems. The exhibition will be held in AGBS’s two gallery spaces from January 30 - May 8, 2026.

TEACHING THE PUBLICLY ENGAGED HUMANITIES: AN INTRODUCTION OCTOBER 3, 2025 9-10:45 AM DFA 4.112 Ever wondered how you could make your classes more community- engaged or how you can use the classroom to initiate student- community collaborations? Come to this introductory talk to learn the basics! Additionally a limited number of spaces are available for a hands-on workshop from 11-12:30 to get attendees started with building a publicly engaged course, with topics including 1) selecting experiential activities that build to a publicly engaged project, 2) supporting successful student teamwork, 3) encouraging meaningful student reflection, and 4) collaborating in mutually beneficial ways with community organizations. Dr. Lisa Dush is the faculty director of HumanitiesX: DePaul University's Experiential Humanities Collaborative, a year-long fellowship program that brings faculty, community partners, and students together to co-design new community-engaged humanities courses. The Collaborative has received two rounds of funding totaling $1.5M from the Mellon Foundation. An associate professor of Writing, Rhetoric, and Discourse, Dush also coordinates DePaul’s Strategic Writing and Advancement for Nonprofits graduate certificate. Dush has published widely about digital and new media writing, particularly in nonprofit settings and community-engaged classrooms. Her recent scholarship uses the HumanitiesX model to articulate more collaborative and experiential approaches to humanities education.
