Come on Kev, pull your finger out. The one thing I always say about you is that you are simply not investing enough time recording podcasts 😂 Enjoy your visit and tell Corey I said hi. I'll be chatting to him about Scrooged very soon, hopefully.

Thanks so much for having me on the show, I really enjoyed chatting to you guys. Sad to hear that you are bringing things to a close but they say to leave them wanting more so your timing feels right. Exciting to learn there is a new project on the horizon as well!

I know appeals to the Lord aren't necessarily literal and don't automatically put me off but it does usually mean a song needs to work a bit harder to win me over. I'll give this one more time to see if it's a grower but 6 out of 10 for me. Can't wait to hear your special Freddie episode!

I'd fallen behind but all caught up now. Last week's song, Like a Diamond, is another low key classic. Not quite very top tier Tom, but it's excellent. This week I'm not sold on the song as much. I do like the main riff and your episode really brought out more of the subtleties of the music.

the defiantly non-melodic and aggressive vibe; the menacing sleazy atmosphere; and that unsettling feeling of wrongness. It's not a comfortable listen but it is real and, just like The Wall, it's a soundtrack to a vivid and powerful story.

Great episode. You've articulated the essence of this song brilliantly.

The first time I heard it, only a couple of weeks ago, the feel of it instantly put me in mind of Pink Floyd, and specifically the section of the album The Wall when it all starts to psychologically unravel for the protagonist:

Another brilliantly constructed and vivid song. I see it as a mirror to Into The Great Wide Open. It has a similar style and pace, both telling a very literal story about a journey through the music industry, but one is about the wonder of possibility and the other is crushingly cynical.

Very nice writing, Kev. I see you've gone a bit viral on FB as well!

I don't know the album well enough yet to confidently comment but I'm interested in what you make of 'Joe'. It reminds me fairly strongly of a specific album by a specific band, not one I'd ordinarily associate with Tom, but I don't know if it's an obvious connection or just a 'me' thing.

Really strong opening track. Razor sharp satire wrapped up in a great pop melody, and the whole thing sounds assured and smooth. The "last human voice" line, which is the emotional core of the song, has never seemed more relevant in our world of rapidly advancing AI.

We'll still get some nice days in September. Cooler evenings here to stay though.

Oooh you went a bit viral there. That's cool. It does seem random but that happened because you wrote a post in a way that connected with people. So it was your writing, really.

I was walking to work the other day listening on my headphones and this song really hit me hard, to the point where I was holding back the tears. I'm putting it up there with Room At The Top and Echo on an emotional level. They are the big 3 from the album for me, but lots of other great songs too.

I love this song. Probably my favourite of his.

Which album? I'm still listening to Tull. Slowly seeping in. Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play are the latest I've listened to.

Lyrically, this one almost risks falling into accidentally silly territory with its simple rhymes and extended animal based imagery, but instead it succeeds in being real and hard-hitting. Cracking song, and you guided us through it expertly, as always

I'm a bit behind but listened to this today. Very well crafted and heartfelt tribute.

Also, always great to hear that Kevin Brown belting out a tune. Fine work from that fella.

I think your summary was fair. It's a decent and pleasant enough song, but quite lightweight by Tom's standards.

It was fascinating to hear your insight into Mike and Tom's relationship and how Tom responded to his later songwriting efforts. I'll have to read Mike's book at some point. I think Mike has smashed it here. Very simple but it has a spiky, rocky attitude that I really like. Cool song.

I understand. I know you aren't criticising, just reflecting on how you felt, but lesson learnt on my part. I'm happy to avoid politics on there and generally do. Just drifted into it yesterday, as a tangent from the FB convo, which was already a tangent from the most popular song dusted question.

Beautiful song

Sorry again! 🙂

As an aside, I semi-coincidentally rewatched Young Guns last week, with Emilio Estevez playing Billy the Kid. It doesn't hold up quite as well as I'd hoped from my teen memories, but still very slick and good capering fun.

I like this one. Similar theme to Won't Last Long and Swinging, with that sense of fighting back in hard times, and after some of the bleaker songs it's a welcome contrast. The verses give context and depth to the ultimately defiant sentiment, and it's a catchy chorus that you can get behind it.
