There are one or two Doctor Who fans at the Borthwick so, as you might imagine, this has caused some excitement!

While it's impossible to improve on perfection, Rowntree's attempted it in 1933 by adding a clear wrapping and a jaunty blue ribbon.

Incredibly, this was its last appearance in the catalogues, although some say on dark nights at the Cocoa Works you can still hear the distant rustle of cellophane...

In 1932 Terry's would be inspired to create another chocolate fruit - the famous Chocolate Orange which quickly outstripped the lowly Apple in popularity. But the Terry's Chocolate Dessert Apple continued to be made in York until 1954 - and, no doubt, was enjoyed around many a dinner table!

Access can sometimes be granted to the direct relatives (or to the patient themselves) but this has to be evaluated on a case by case basis.

Access to any patient records less than 100 years old is restricted so the digitised records only go as late as the 1920s. If someone wishes to access more recent records we would encourage them to get in touch with us directly.

If you're unsure where to begin, the patient case records for Clifton Hospital and The Retreat have been indexed and can be searched on Borthcat (use the Reference Code to identify the right volume on Discover York):

Clifton: borthcat.york.ac.uk/nhs-clf-6
The Retreat: borthcat.york.ac.uk/ret-6
