A new species of fossil billfish has been named Zealandorhynchus fordycei, honouring the legacy of the late Emeritus Professor Ewan Fordyce ❤️‍🩹

The species is one of two rare fossil billfish skulls from about 50 million years ago found in Otago.

Thanks to Antarctica NZ for installing the University of Otago’s sea ice monitoring station (SIMS) in McMurdo Sound for the 2025 winter season.
Associate Professor Inga Smith and Dr Greg Leonard have been collecting measurements from the SIMS for over 20 years.

We acknowledge the passing of Dr Philip Silva, the founder of the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Heath and Development Study. Our thoughts are with his whānau, friends, the many University kaimahi who were lucky enough to work with him, and all of those whose lives have been impacted by his research.
