Some Georgia coverage in Private Eye—who on earth do they get to write this stuff ;)

When Bidzina tore up decades of foreign policy work and turned Georgia towards Russia I was shocked more diplomats—people whose life’s work was ruined—didn’t resign. Now Trump has done the same thing and the State Department is falling into line just like in Georgia

Finally my work is published in the Glenkens Gazette, the worlds best local paper

I would like to make it clear that while I support moving Christmas to Dec 25th, that comes with the important proviso that January 7th remain a public holiday as "Old Christmas", just like we have Old New Year on Jan 14. This is fitting and what the baby Jesus would have wanted

Rene Magritte looks like a mix of David Lynch and Leonid Brezhnev

Could they be doing this to each other???

They had a really rough year. The children have a rare disease, and the dad lost his savings to a scammer in Credit Suisse. Just a week before New Year they were caught up in a misunderstanding with the American government, and now they might have to look for work in Russia. 2/n

Guys I don't normally ask but this New Year I'm doing a fundraiser for a disadvantaged family of patriotic Georgians from a remote village in Imereti. 1/n

An atheist who unleashes religious bigotry for political purposes. A man responsible for elevating homophobia to a national priority. He and Rukhadze are laughing at their supporters as they try to use their prejudices to maintain power. It can't go on forever. Ends

You would hope that having a gay daughter would make you think twice before turning your TV station into a platform to those who would make her marriage illegal, prevent her from appearing in public and even do her physical harm. But that doesn't seem to trouble Rukhadze. 8/n

While many people had long know about this, it was spread widely on Georgian Facebook yesterday by LGBT and environmental activist Tamar Jakeli. 7/n

I wish her all the best. But one has to wonder how she feels about her dad using his propaganda machine to decry same sex marriage as the greatest threat to western civilisation. How does he justify his support of anti-gay pogroms to her? Especially when she post things like this 6/n:

The greatest irony of all, is that over the past five years, as Imedi has gone from a mere government mouthpiece to a Der Stürmer-like anti-gay hate channel, Rukhadze's American daughter Alexandra has been living openly as a gay woman. Here she is at her wedding. 5/n
December 20, 2024 at 8:44 AM
Yet for Imedi owner Rukhadze this anti-gay crusade is a charade. Rukhadze himself is a liberal. An enabler of violence, a friend to pro-oligarchs, a proven liar in court, but a liberal. His mother even worked for the Soros Foundation. 4/n
December 20, 2024 at 8:38 AM
Imedi's vicious campaign against LGBT people runs in parallel to that of the government, whose promise of anti-LGBT constitutional amendments were a key part of their election strategy. Their nomination of notorious homophobe Mikheil Kavelashvili was the latest move in this campaign. 3/n
December 20, 2024 at 8:31 AM
There is lots (lots) to say about Rukhadze's chequered past, but pertinent here is how the UK-resident, US citizen has turned Imedi TV into a vehicle for spreading hated, lies and conspiracy theories about gay people, Soros, and the decadent West in general. 2/n
December 20, 2024 at 8:27 AM
Bitter irony that the men driving Georgia towards becoming an authoritarian, theocratic nightmare are themselves liberals. Prime example: minigarch Irakli Rukhadze, owner of H̵u̵t̵u̵ ̵P̵o̵w̵e̵r̵ ̵R̵a̵d̵i̵o̵ TV Imedi, a Goebbelsian figure at the heart of the regime. 1/n

Judging by this readout, Macron called Bidzina in order to berate him for an hour—which actually sounds quite fun
December 11, 2024 at 11:33 AM
He too made a weak statement on the ongoing events. I accept that his political career is over, and after what BI put his family through I can't blame him. But still, now is the time to speak clearly in favour of the EU future of Georgia. Ends
December 8, 2024 at 10:41 AM
Finally, the MIA figure I would personally like to see make a stand is Irakli Alasania. Ex defence minister, Abkhaz negotiator and UN envoy--he is the best president we never had. Cruelly destroyed by Bidzina in 2014, he left politics for good. 14/n
December 8, 2024 at 10:38 AM
He seldom comments on political events, and his statement on latest protests was mealy mouthed and weak. Come on Giorgi! You were a good PM and want the EU too. Time to make it clear where you stand, then I'll meet you at the airport like you did that Dutch tourist. 13/n
