I think about this quote from @georgemonbiot.bsky.social a lot:

“The idea that some people may freely poison others is one of the most astonishing but least contested aspects of modern life.”
We are being poisoned every day, so why do we keep voting for more pollution? Ask a lobbyist | George Monbiot
The dirty industries that dominate politics deceive us into accepting dangerous pollutants such as ammonia as part of life, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

They're using the confinement box, one of the most horrific methods of CIA torture in the post-9/11 black sites, against migrants now. This is the direct result of the lack of consequences for the architects of the torture program. Either there will be criminal penalties for this or it will expand.

Today I learned that NASA has a collection of free ebooks that can be downloaded as pdfs or ebub format.

The science books even include a children’s section with fun activites and coloring books!

New discovery sets humanity up to image “alien Earth”

Yes, astronomers are preparing to directly image Earth-sized worlds around Sun-like stars for the first time.

Here's how the biggest "missing piece" for getting there just fell into place.

Finding alien Earths requires seeing Earth-sized planets at Earth-like distances from Sun-like stars. A new discovery completes the roadmap.

The actual "laws of physics", not our approximations of them, might be physically inaccessible, meaning that we might not even in principle be able to understand or derive them.

so far this has been *phenomenal*.

i feel intellectually like a different person, and my journey is just beginning…
I am intending to read* ten books** more or less in sequence, starting with the one I am currently reading Beginning Mathematical Logic.

This will improve my mathematical maturity by a lot. :)

*for one book: read selected chapters
**books/lecture notes.
For the first time, I am interested in mathematical logic — the study of formal logic in mathematics.

Over the years, I have learned bits and pieces, but I never took the time to study it by itself.

It helps that Peter Smith’s “Beginning Mathematical Logic: A Study Guide” is quite wonderful :)

Pete Hegseth is a straight-up serial killer

No asterisk, no caveat, he simply orchestrated—multiple times on multiple dates—a criminal conspiracy to murder unarmed persons who the U.S. military code deemed incapacitated and not a threat and then went online and admitted to doing it knowingly
