Breastfeeding Committee For Canada | Baby Friendly Initiative's Michelle LeDrew & #MCHPResearch’s Dr. Nathan Nickel worked with hospitals to adapt WHO's Baby-Friendly Initiative, addressing disparities in support & low breastfeeding rates. Successes will guide expansion into other settings. #NBW2025

#MCHPReserach has linked Manitoba's Healthy Baby Prenatal Benefit Program to better outcomes for newborns & mothers, but a new study found these impacts decreased between 2003-2019 as the monthly payments, since doubled, remained at 2001 levels despite inflation.

Congratulations to the “Reclaiming the Traditional Practice of Breastfeeding for First Nations, Inuit and Métis Families: Breaking Down Barriers within the Healthcare System” research team Awarded a five year, $2M CIHR Embracing Diversity to Achieve Precision & Health Equity Team Grant To support community-led efforts to improve breastfeeding rates Breastfeeding is a traditional practice that leads to better outcomes for mothers, children and families Generations of colonial harms and systemic racism have impacted this bond between mother and child by damaging trust and causing loss of traditional knowledge and practice Today, First Nations, Inuit and Métis people have some of Canada’s lowest breastfeeding rates. This collaborative project centres community and relationships. It will draw on the knowledge and wisdom of elders and communities across Canada to reclaim traditional breastfeeding practices in a culturally safe way, adapting the Breastfeeding Committee for Canada’s Baby Friendly Initiative. This project is community- driven and collaborative. It’s been developed by First Nations, Métis and Inuit researchers from across Canada, with input from elders, knowledge users and communities, and from healthcare providers, academics and members of the Breastfeeding Committee of Canada. Together, they will work to identify and address barriers discouraging the adoption of breastfeeding and develop a culturally safe, anti-racist framework to apply the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative.
