The absence of young people from conventional protests is both a problem and a warning. The opposition to Mr. Trump's authoritarian speed run requires new strategies that will engage a wider swath of the population. In Chicago, for instance, neighbors have formed community groups that use tools ranging from text messages to whistles to counter harrowing immigration raids. Whatever form the opposition takes, it must offer what conventional protest currently does not: a morally compelling form of resistance that can deliver results.

The more persuasive explanation for the relative lack of young people in the anti-Trump, pro-democracy movement is that they are demobilized and demoralized. But it would be a mistake to blame them for this attitude. Older generations should instead recognize that the world we have created does not seem to offer a viable path to making change. Consider the experiences of the last few years. The racial justice movement that peaked in 2020 ended in disappointment and backlash. The Gaza protests provoked intense conflict without delivering clear political or policy victories for their organizers. Maybe most important, Mr. Trump himself is back in the White House, suggesting a futility to opposition and activism among young people who have only ever known him as the central figure in our politics. He first took the oath of office when today's first-year college students were in elementary school. The electoral choices offered to young people are not much better. Given the realities of our dysfunctional two-party system, the only alternative to a Trump-dominated G.O.P. is the Democratic Party, which is dominated by a decadent gerontocracy whose elites were more likely to attend a wedding in the Hamptons than a No Kings protest on the same day.

This, for example, is in the context of Elon wanting to go to Mars. I think going to Mars is a bad idea but I don’t think the problem is that Earth is a “limit” that “holds us together,” the problem is that life on Mars would be terrible and dependent on life on Earth.

But then, modern Western people simply don't understand how pre-modern people think. They simply cannot take Muslims seriously when they talk of jihad — even though this has always been the Islamic way of war. Eating dinner at a bar in Washington on Saturday night, I sat next to a European journalist (I won't identify his country, to err on the side of protecting him) who has been living in self-imposed exile in the US for some years. He had to flee his native country because his reporting on jihadism earned him multiple death threats. He told me he used to be a standard liberal, but his brutal experience with how liberals in his country, especially his colleagues in the media, refused to take his reporting seriously. They considered him Islamophobic, and a disturber of the peace. Some of the homegrown jihadis he wrote about subsequently carried out one of the most horrific jihad attacks in modern Europe history. Black folks overwhelmingly dominate US football and basketball. So what? They're disproportionately good at what they do. Same with jazz, back in the day. Why should we care? Well, I can think of a reason. If a particular ethnic or religious group gained domination in a profession or field of endeavor, and used that domination to keep people not of that group from participating in it, even if those outgroup members had the skills and qualifications to do so, then yeah, it's a problem. I believe whites have cause to complain about how the deck has been stacked against them in this way by liberals and progressives who believe it is just to disadvantage individual whites, for the cause of making up for past historical discrimination. If you think white people, or people of any color or religion, are going to accept that forever, you're an idiot.

Right, if you are a shareholder of an Elon Musk company, the deal is (1) you give him whatever he wants whenever he wants it and (2) the stock goes up. Obviously corporate governance experts hate that; it's terrible governance; really it's no governance at all. Some investors hate it too, but the remedy for them is not to invest in Elon Musk companies, and they mostly don't. The people who invest in Elon Musk companies are mostly fine with the deal, and that really is the deal.

Extremely funny details about this from Matt Levine’s newsletter today. (The background here is that this payout is mostly Tesla stock and is about helping Elon control the company more than any specific amount of money.)
But a couple of readers have emailed me with one more idea. The idea is a shareholder agreement: Tesla could sign an agreement with Musk saying that, as long as Musk is a 15% shareholder of Tesla, he has certain control rights. He gets to designate some board members, say, or he gets veto power over certain business decisions, or he can decide on Tesla's robotics investments. Give him veto power over the board firing him as CEO. You give him contractual control over the robot army, control that can't be overridden by a shareholder vote.[1] That gives him the control he wants, without any more shares. Can Tesla do that? Well! The precedent is that Moelis & Co., the investment bank, had a shareholder agreement a bit like that with Ken Moelis, its founder and chief executive officer. (Not robots, I mean, but Ken Moelis got to pick the board of directors and had a right of approval over financing decisions, budgets, new business lines, executive hiring and firing, etc.) A Moelis & Co. shareholder sued, arguing that the company couldn't give up that much power to one shareholder-CEO. A Delaware court agreed, finding that those decisions have to be made by the board, not a shareholder; we talked about the ruling last year. It was controversial, and ultimately it was overturned by statute: Delaware's legislature passed a new law saying that companies could have shareholder agreements handing over control rights to a shareholder.[2] So, yes, a Delaware public company could do that. But Tesla is not a Delaware public company: It was, but then a Delaware court struck down Musk's previous big pay package, so Tesla reincorporated to Texas in a huff. Everyone assumes that Texas law will generally be friendlier to Musk than Delaware was, and that the move to Texas will generally give Tesla more power to give Musk whatever he wants. But not this! Texas's law about shareholder agreements is more restrictive than Delaware's; Tesla could enter a shareholder agreement like that, but only if it is approved by all shareholders, which is practically impossible in a public company.[3] Because it is a Texas company, Tesla can't just hand Musk control over its robot army. It has to hand him a huge pile of stock instead.
