If only there were some sort of machine that could learn the context of words. Then you could build some sort of Big Word Model to do the work of at least a first pass on cataloging information, and type in actual human language queries 🤔

And de-facto segregation now is still a big problem just based on housing markets sorting people, in part on purpose.

Legalized segregation is still well within living memory. My mother was an early integrated school attendee, and I'm in my 30s. My great grandmother had big reservations about that, and on the southern scale of racism my family is very much on the non racist end, for however much that is worth.

The dumbest thing I have ever done was take the listed 2 week (!??) leave for my first kid, and not take advantage of the 'unlimited' pto at the time. Even as the one not physically giving birth, that was rough and bad for everyone.

My current employer has a 5 month paternity, and 6 month maternity leave. Which is really great. It forces the org to actually consider that in the more usual lengths, the person coming back will be sleep deprived and stressed. So might as well just plan for them being away in a serious way.

I haven't watched that one, but this might have convinced me to go see the train wreck.

And yeah, I feel like I totally lucked into being an engineer, which I love, and that to a great extent relied on being a lower middle class white boy who was good at math so didn't have to "prove" that I could handle that first dev job.

My version of this is that as a child I learned basic, and naturally wanted to make games. So I looked at an example of a 3d rotating cube in basic, and concluded that I was clearly not smart enough for this programming thing. Then tried to do economics and learned hey I am actually able to code.

My hell is traditionally landscape instead of portrait mode GitHub actions. Congrats on making what seems to be decently parallel hell.

I listened to thousands of hours of podcasts and audiobooks on this thing. Kept me sane doing janitorial work in the middle of the night.

I had the target exclusive red zune, and it ruled. The PC software was also legitimately the best windows software design UI and implementation at the time.

My non marketed as fast kia ev accelerates faster than the turbocharged 2002 Subaru I owned, which is crazy. thankfully cars now have a lot of impact warnings and auto breaking, but yeah for a kid-carrier-mobile it's getting wild.

Yeah, it's pretty reliable if you can say something funny or point out common ground, if you have to remind some fellow beer drinker that you are in fact a real human like them. Some people have insane parts of their brain that try to take the wheel.

There definitely is some Jevon's paradox in this though where we will end up using more compute. But yeah, the demand I don't think is going away, so really a tradeoff of efficient hyperscaler vs some other power/shipping/supply chain waste.

I was going to comment on the quoted post that I had essentially the same experience as you. Really does force you to confront your ideas of self.

No, Dems just need to alienate their voters by adopting the position that no actually, the super unpopular militarization of police and demonization of immigrants is very good 🙄

Between his cool kid contrarian takes and Noah Smith being... whatever he is now, my mid 2010s enthusiastic follows are giving me some things to reconsider.

That would be really cool. This is the most exciting project for me in recent memory. Just made local development so much better, but I ignored it for a while because I mistakenly put it in the dapr bucket as probably an azure thing I will never care about.

What would you want it to do? Build and execute your things outside of a container for debugging? The thing I have really loved about it is that I can just run whatever from it, regardless of language.

They use dynamodb for distributed locks in ec2 management. This definitely feels like they couldn't make the thing to fix a down service depend on the service, so that tech debt is pushed down the road.

I was a teenage metal guitarist, and yeah, I wasn't terrible I think, but definitely young and dumb in most ways.
October 17, 2025 at 2:22 PM
As someone who doesn't listen to lyrics at all, and gets new metal recommendations purely from random algorithms, I wonder how many are just terrible people.
