to be fair though regarding its chart placing, I don't think people were buying this record for Alabama Song so much as the b-side, the new mostly-acoustic version of Space Oddity that he'd performed on Kenny Everett and consequently got most of the radio airplay

I dont think there's really a right and wrong because everyone uses different techniques. Consistency is more important.
