Or perhaps that those peoples' center-gripped shields worked well enough in shield-wall formations due to their size or construction, while still permitting good performance in more fluid engagements?
November 29, 2025 at 4:32 PM
Center-gripped shields were preferred. At the same time, those peoples seem to have been renown for fighting in shield walls.

Does your point suggest that those peoples might not have fought in shield walls as commonly as they are thought? (cont.)

Thank you for these awesome articles, as always!

Question in re the point on "aspis-style shields being more suited for shield-wall style formations than center grip shields": my layman's understanding of early medieval Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon warfare is that (cont.)

Walmart be cheap
November 26, 2025 at 4:27 PM
Because "Walmart+ including fees, subscription, etc. is still cheaper than other grocery stores due to sheer grocery price disparity between Walmart and other places" sounds entirely plausible
November 26, 2025 at 4:27 PM
I know you did the math on this already for yourself, but I'm actually curious as to how the numbers work out for folks in your area and position in re using Walmart+ vs getting groceries yourself

And some pointed out that, again, what works in NYC might not necessarily work outside it
November 26, 2025 at 2:58 PM
there was a discussion around the time of the recent November elections across the country as to whether Dems should focus on more local tactics than trying to impose a national platform on all Dems everywhere
November 26, 2025 at 2:58 PM
FWIW, Mamdani won the Democrats' primary with 43% of the votes, in contrast to Eric Adams's 30% back in 2021.

However, there is still the question of whether a platform that works in NYC would necessarily work outside it
November 26, 2025 at 2:57 PM
On the other other hand, Cuomo was unpopular as hell; would any ex-Democrat idiot trying to split the vote have split it as much as Cuomo did? Or was Mamdani not as popular as we think, because even the unpopular Cuomo managed to split the vote that much?
November 26, 2025 at 2:38 PM
I'm kinda torn on how to interpret that mayoral elections in re: Mamdani's popularity. On one hand he did demonstrably worse than other Democrats in NYC elections for the past couple of decades, on the other hand Cuomo did split the votes

This year Im hoping to do a roast leg of lamb
November 26, 2025 at 2:03 PM
So last yeear was pot roast, plus braised lamb shoulder. Desserts were gingersnap cookies, homemade rice crispies, jelly cookies, and a cranberry olive oil cake
November 26, 2025 at 2:03 PM
I normally do xmas with a particular pair of friends because I live away from family, so each year they do a classic pot roast while I'm let off the leash to do a different meat dish and desserts

Oh for sure, if you're talking about all writing systems throughout history then the meme kinda falls apart, but a hilarious number of currently commonly-used writing systems (perhaps all but literally 1?) directly descend from either hieroglyphs or oracle bones
November 25, 2025 at 11:28 PM
Latin alphabet? Hieroglyphics
Nordic runes? Hieroglyphics
Chinese hanzi? Oracle bones
Japanese Kanji? Oracle bones

You might think Mongolian Phags-pa is Oracle bones, but it's actually Hieroglyphics

Though I suppose "I'm going to describe my personal dislike of X food in a hyperbolic manner for clicks on social media" sorts of takes is what it is
November 25, 2025 at 8:27 PM
I'm in a weird position where I tend to view any food that doesn't necessitate extreme animal or human cruelty, or extreme danger to humans, as being valid, so people going off on how X food is the devil is a little strange to me sometimes

I'm curious as to whether some of the respondents saying "yes" to that particular question might be imagining a city life that is a substantial upgrade from their current circumstances (i.e. living in MUCH richer circumstances), rather than mostly the same circumstances but with city amenities
November 25, 2025 at 8:16 PM
If the respondent lives in, say, a 3 bedroom suburban house with a front + back yard and 1 car, and is told "move to the city and money is no object", what sort of lifestyle is the respondent imagining? A penthouse suite in the heart of Manhattan? A nice 1 or 2 bedroom apartment somewhere in NYC?
November 25, 2025 at 8:15 PM
In re: that poll, I'm curious as to how the qualifier "if money were no object" comes across to respondents. (cont.)

Pies are friggin' awesome
