It finds a planet entirely wrapped in a thick layer of ice. Under the ice it detects signs that there was once life on this world, but no longer. The probe finishes its scans and prepares to leave and travel to the next star. The End.

This was immediately followed by a sudden change in genre to scifi, with a chapter about an autonomous space probe entering a new planetary system and scanning the planets therein

I actually dreamed this ending to the books at some point. In my dream, the book ended soon after a chapter about getting ready for the Battle of Winterfell. The cold, creeping dread, and knowledge that this coming battle was their best last chance at turning the tide of the war
