Oh I’ve spent my afternoon dealing with an ungodly amount of lights. And three very excitable young children who not so much decorated the tree as vomited Christmas decorations upon it.

I came here to say that! It’s official — @jakearchibald.com is weird. I know we’ve all suspected it for some time but now we have the proof!

When we first reviewed JPEG XL, as far as we could see no other browser engine wanted it. Our judgement was the benefit wasn't worth the cost. Then Safari decided otherwise and shipped it. Once Mozilla expressed their openness to shipping, it was inevitable that Chromium would too.

You’ve a bit of a crazed look in that second photo. Might wanna lay off it for a bit. Just saying…

Sorry I'm outta ideas then.

Definitely sounds more like a bug, then something intentional though it seems from my understanding.

Hunting around, it seems like this has been reported in the past. But then a bug fix happened in early 2024 and not found any new reported cases since — except yours.

TLDR: if you're a #webperf nerd like myself, you will soon have a bit more information about LCP times. Most of you probably won't need this level of detail, but it's there if you need it.

They're also in FCP (for FF and Chrome) and we're looking to bring the same level of detail to INP.

These are in Chrome Canary already.

Firefox and Safari Tech Preview have paintTime but not presentationTime. FF are working on it IIRC, but Safari's rendering pipeline is a bit different so even if they do add that, it'll likely be a bit earlier than when pixels actually hit the screen.

You won't notice any change in ultimate LCP time — these are just extra timestamps before that.

This makes it easier to more easily compare these times across browsers because, as I said, presentationTime (so LCP time) is often quite different between the engines.

Maybe it's got confused. Try removing that permission. Restarting the app. And then navigating from "Your location" (where it will ask you to turn it on again)?

Check app settings to see if you have location enabled (including Precise location). Turning that off reproduced the issue for me. Also if you try to set the start location to "Your location" then it should offer to turn this on if it sees it's off.

Weird!

I still see it. But it only appears after you’ve selected one of the public options it lists. Are you doing that?
