The John Woodman Higgins Armory Collection, 2014.89.1 During the late 1500s, Japanese warlords and generals wore flamboyant "extraordinary helmets" (kawari-kabuto) to distinguish themselves amidst uniformly armored foot soldiers and brilliantly attired samurai. This masterpiece of metalwork likely belonged to one of the most important men in Japan at the time. It was so admired that several derivative copies were made during the 1600s. The helmet is sculpted as a sea-conch shell, with a brim textured like the skin of a sea-ray. In Japanese culture, the conch shell is a symbol of worldly and religious authority. Japanese generals used conch shells as trumpets for signaling on the battlefield. It was also a symbol of Buddha's voice and the preaching of Buddhist Law.
