Former epidemiologist, writer, gamer, knitter and obsessed with my dog. Lots of TTRPGs. I like to make people sad over fictional characters for fun. 41, lesbian/kinky, disastrous, she/her.
If these students don't have a bunch of classmates to compare themselves to that are not experiencing the same thing ...

I don't think it's solely Long COVID. I think there's definitely a role for "What's the point of any of this?" driven by trauma/world events.

But I also think about how my friends w/ ADHD talk about thinking they were "broken" as kids because they could see they were different from their peers.
November 29, 2025 at 2:35 PM
I would be frantic if I felt my capacity altered by Long COVID so I totally see where you're coming from. But I'm also an adult with a set personality who would be very aware of the change in my abilities.

It's been a long time since I was 18/19, so maybe I'm off on this, but with the pandemic starting 6 years ago, some of these young people could have been 13/14 years old when they were infected.

To them it may feel like their normal and not like a loss they want to recover.

And I think it was the worst possible time for this kind of AI, for that reason. We put people in a position where thinking is a struggle and then are like "But it's okay, you don't have to grapple with any of this, just let this program think for you."

Also the way we're basically playing chicken with global warming and aiming to lose.
November 29, 2025 at 12:12 AM
Definitely multifactorial with that, I'm sure.
November 29, 2025 at 12:11 AM
You seem to be responding to a personal frustration rather than the actual conversation that is happening.
November 29, 2025 at 12:06 AM
I don't think you read the thread I am responding to, where the poster (who is a teaching professional) repeatedly says it's not dunking on students, that there is something more going on with motivation AND comprehension.
November 29, 2025 at 12:04 AM
That would explain why it is happening at all levels.
November 28, 2025 at 10:42 PM
We know it causes brain fog and difficulty with processing, and we've decided to just let people get it over and over.
November 28, 2025 at 10:41 PM
Honestly, I think there is a role here for COVID related cognitive dysfunction.
November 28, 2025 at 10:41 PM
(also part of that rule is that I live in ABQ now, not PDX, so my sweater wearing days are far more limited now 😆)
November 27, 2025 at 4:13 PM
What a find! I have made a rule for myself not to buy sweaters anymore since I can make them, but I'd make an exception for beautiful, cheap cashmere! Cashmere yarn is pricey.
November 27, 2025 at 4:12 PM
You look lovely. That sweater (?) is a great color for you.

I suspect those people are people like me ... Who never actually use their art supplies, just occasionally look at them wistfully and then ignore them again for months.

I have several art supply suitcases and I bet they all suck. 😂
November 27, 2025 at 3:54 PM
So I'm definitely going to come back to this thread if I realize I need more art supplies because the ones I've got are too old or too poor quality to be worth using!
November 26, 2025 at 10:27 PM
I have heard (and agree with) the sentiment that knitting/crochet and yarn collecting are two different hobbies. Art supplies are like that for me too, I have a goal to actually TRY my shit this year and dispose of anything that's so old it isn't good anymore.

This was mine, too. I fucking loved that game, and I tried to re-acquire it through various means only to find none of them worked.

They don't even need to remaster it. I'd play it as is if it worked on my computer.

(lil cardigans and vests are so fun because they're way faster than adult versions of the same)
November 25, 2025 at 4:53 PM
I will continue to stand by my assertion that there is currently no ethical use case for an AI that can 'pass' as a human. Like, can you think of one? I sure as hell can't.

Solves the loneliness epidemic right up until the point where it gives some kid explicit instructions for suicide.
November 25, 2025 at 4:52 PM
Those are *gorgeous*.

I have not forgotten you either, I am currently going through my yarn stash, and I'm betting I have some yarn in there that would be useful for lil cardigans or sweaters or vests or whatever.
November 25, 2025 at 4:51 PM
If I tried to do that myself it would be a months long endeavor and I would probably use more energy in the process than an AI would use to do it for me.

The fact that it needs to gratuitously kiss my ass, and kill god knows how many forests telling me how smart I am makes me want to scream.
