and it's important to wonder WHY he didn't mention it? Especially if it is what Pyle is famously known for? What narrative is he trying to spin? Does he think people reading a book about pirates wouldn't want to know about the person who shaped the pirate look for generations?

But I find it a bit suss that he didn't mention Pyles art, just using historian to give it an air of legitimacy, when Pyle was known for basically creating the pirate aesthetic we see today.

Pyle’s pirate imagery, perhaps his best known work, is a unique combination of historical accuracy and his own personal vision. His interest in authenticity is demonstrated by his archive of costume books and historic manuscripts. Recent research has revealed, however, that there was very little visual information regarding exactly what pirates wore. Pyle filled in the blanks with his vibrant imagination to create images that still shape our view of pirate clothing today.

BUT backtracking a bit because I do want to be clear on the Drake shit, it was not about him helping the BPOC but them being helped because he was very much part of the slave trade.

Hawkins allied himself with two local kings in Sierra Leone who asked for help against their enemies in exchange for half of any captives they took. Drake, for his own reasons, lets some BPOC gain liberty if they wished it! Yes, there were ulterior motives, but the point is, "pirate" did a thing for BPOCs which probably helped.

It was a good tradition. Getting outside in the cold air helped him clear his head. Looking at something other than a glowing screen helped ease some of the ever-present ache behind his eyes. This time of year the trees were ripening into full blown autumn, red and gold wherever you looked, errant leaves carpeting the green spaces. Everyone in long coats and scarves and puffing out crystalline clouds of breath. His own a cloud of smoke; but curbing the exhaustion far outweighed the guilt. He tried to keep it light. To three or four a day; but sometimes a midnight craving hit him and he found himself leaning out the window of the third floor, the taste of mint on the tip of his tongue. It was terrible and he knew it but it felt like a blessing.

It’s nothing like that,” Izzy muttered, hoping the lad didn’t see his face heating at the implication. It couldn’t be like that. And even if sometimes when the wind blew right and thoughts snuck in… when dreams left him breathing a little heavily than he should in the hotel room, that was just a fucking fantasy. “Alright, I hear you,” Spriggs said. “And I’m not judging either way. That man is fine as hell though for my part I’d only go one night.” Izzy snorted. “You wouldn’t go a single hour.” Not that Spriggs didn’t have his charms, but Edward seemed to like…the strange, vague, pretty ones. Or the fucking hurricane that was Stede fucking Bonnet. Neither of which were good for him. “Ouch, bitch,” said Spriggs, a hand over his heart. But he didn’t seem much put out by it. “But that’s fair. I’d rather a full course meal than a snack any day.” He swept his gaze up and down Izzy’s body appraisingly. Izzy let him look and let his own gaze linger on the lad’s form. It might be a good time. He let himself imagine it. The darkness of the flat or Spriggs’ hotel. The hot readiness of the young man’s body. The straightforward conversation of touch and want.

Fortunately, for the moment, he was sat at a McDonald’s just inside the Orly airport, all amber lighting with a tiled floor of muted ambers and golds. The food was simple. Straightforward. Pronounceable, as his father would say, the ghost of his father anyway, who knew two languages; English and Yiddish, which were both enough for him. In any case, Izzy appreciated the familiarity of the idea of the Big Mac (un Big Mac en Mieux he thought wryly), and the mouthfeel of it even if it tasted markedly different than it had stateside. The chips (pomme frites) were different too, healthier maybe. And the Heineken was a welcome addition which no McDonald’s in the US had the balls to try and serve. He also appreciated the a familiarity of Fang and Ivan, sitting across from him, living their own lives in this connected moment. Ivan had finished his quarter pounder (le royal cheese) and was tapping a laboriously long text on his mobile, brow bent in concentration. Occasionally he scratched beneath his neck pillow as if searching for a word or figuring out where the corresponding fucking letter was. Fang had eaten most of his food and was training Pumpkin Spice Latte to balance a chicken nugget (croquette) on her nose. The other dog, Olivier, huffed a sigh at Izzy’s feet as if he didn’t like airports either. Izzy gently nudged him with the side of his foot in commiseration. Fortunately, Olivier didn’t have to suffer this much longer. He didn’t belong to Ivan and Fang, nor Izzy who did not need a dog no matter how big Fang’s eyes got when he brought it up. Instead he belonged to Madam Auclair who had cheerfully rented her small attic room to Fang and Ivan and had equally as cheerfully allowed Izzy to take their place, so long as he took poor little Olivier on an adventure now and then. Or at least that is what he assumed the deal was and what Ivan had confirmed. Izzy’s own French was rusty, learned mostly in secondary school and promptly forgotten.
