I genuinely think furries are the only people that can tell these two canines species apart at a glance because I've seen people readying to call animal control on a regular dog before too lol.

This is true! In general there's a lot of reasons to not just let cats (and dogs obviously) free roam around from larger predators eating them to ya know... cars running them over. Also zoonotic diseases like bird flu can spread from something your pet ate to them.
