An olive green plush that is shaped like a claymore mine, he has legs and a smiling face. Across the front it says 'Front Toward Friend' as a play on the instructions on actual claymores that read 'Front toward enemy' to show how they should be placed in combat.

... was an unambiguous relationship between the percentage of sufferers and the degree of childhood trauma. In a paper entitled 'The Origins of Addiction: Evidence of the Adverse Childhood Experience Study' one of the co-principal investigators, Dr. Vincent Felitti, summarised their findings in terms of addiction: In our detailed study... we found that the compulsive use of nictine, alcohol and injected street drugs increases proportionately in a strong graded dose-response manner that closely parallels the intensity of adverse life experiences during childhood. This of course supports old psychoanalytic views and is at odds with current concepts, including those of biological psychiatry, drug treatment programs and drug eradication programs. Our findings are disturbing to some because they imply that the basic causes of addiction lie within us and the way we treat each other, not in drug dealers or dangerous chemicals. They suggest that billions of dollars have been spent everywhere except where the answer is to be found. Beneath this statement there is a table displaying the results for ACE score vs Adult Alcoholism. It was one of the most sobering things I've ever seen. Five black bars steadily increasing. Book reco: Other Words For Home by Jasmine Warga about Jude, a Syrian girl who moves to America with her mum. The book is written in verse which makes it easy to read but also control the speed of the narrative.

Miller pulls off her jacket, drops it over the back of a chair, winces at the half-drunk coffee cup on the table, and looks apologetically at Rao. Her eyes are the colour of airmail paper, the wrinkles at their corners attest to years of sun.

This is AI, Robot a collection of short stories including one by Caroline Cormack (@bookclubdropout.bsky.social) - it's another of her Robottown stories which I love! This story is styled as a 50's hard boiled detective story and it's great.
