i wouldn't call brokeback mountain a BL (market, audience, timing, no particular reason) but i would recommend both book and film to someone i knew enjoyed BL, if that makes sense.
MMRomance and BL and Yaoi are pretty interchangeable terms for basically the same thing, just in different places.
