Is it okay to ask what happened?

Oh mate.

It's much needed carbs and protein for the local wildlife, I suppose. They'll need it this time of year.

I'm okay, guys. Really. it was a good night. Just a bit weird.

One of their guys probably poured it down a blue whale's blowhole and tried to communicate with it telepathically.

So... yeah. That cinema adventure will go with me to my grave.

I remember, at the time, wanting to make a joke about the mould being in pretty bad shape before it produced me, but I think I kept it to myself. I just sat and listened to him talk.

Next time we went out together was a trip to the Jolly Giant to spend my winnings. Surer footing for both of us.

That night, pickled and fearing the reaper, was the closest he ever came to being able to tell me he loved me. The archetypal Glasgow hard man, he had zero training in understanding or dealing with emotions, at least without violence.

"They broke the mould when they made you, kid."

Looking back, I can see my Dad had really been going through it and clearly needed to find comfort in the presence of his friends after the funeral. This wasn't long after my first cancer and, when we talked, I could tell even as a kid that he had been contemplating mortality.

My Dad was a hardened drinker back in the day, and despite nailing another 4 or 5 pints he made it through the film and was fairly coherent when we got home. I emptied my pockets and found I had accumulated £33 in change. At the time, I considered the night an absolute win.

4 pubs and 2 or 3 more taxis later we saw the film. It was breathtaking.

Each time we arrived at a different pub, Dad gave me £1 for the fruit machine to occupy me while he caught up with people. I played until I won, then sat and watched him talk and commiserate until it was time to move on.

We got a taxi to the cinema. This was 1992 so the cinema was much more popular, and as it was opening weekend it was sold out. So we booked a ticket for the next showing in 2 hours and went to the pub to check in on a group of Dad's friends after the funeral.

I had a similar experience watching Revenge of the Sith. Time has been kind to it, but on opening weekend we were underwhelmed.

When the medical droid said Padme had 'lost the will to live' I whispered "So have I, George..."

My mate next to me stifled a laugh, as we appeared to be in the minority.
