Hats off to Shirley Chisolm, another NY native from Bed-Stuy with strong roots in Barbados, and the first black woman to serve in the US Congress. Honored posthumously by President Barack Obama, we continue to honor her work today.

In my personal education on black history, today I learned of Bayard Rustin. Not only a key behind the scenes figure who worked extensively on the civil rights movement, under Dr King himself, but a gay man who also fought for LGBT+ rights in the 80s.

You may not have heard of Cathay Williams, the only woman known to have served the US military during the "Indian Wars," and certainly the only black woman known to do so. Her achievements highlight how complex racial identities can be in historical context.

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

Today's shoutout goes to Susan McKinney Steward, the third black woman to earn a medical degree and the first to do so in my home state of NY. She not only earned her degree- she was Validictorian!

In 1941, Time called George Washington Carver the "Black Leonardo [da Vinci]." Da Vinci came from wealth, and that is how he was afforded the luxury of his education and inventions. Carver came from enslavement, from less than nothing, and achieved true greatness.

I dont see how this is different from PM saying "here's an article I wrote," but aside from that, I think it's weird to be mad a black man isnt fixing the problem white supremacy started.

And that's what they did, those like you, you and I. These people didn't come from another planet. These were people like us. Hitler didnt arrest me, not Göring, not Goebbels. 1/2

Buy indigenous art. These beautiful ethchings are based off of photos taken by the lovely Meriam. The best way to show how much you hate the current American govt is to support indigenous people.

@tomsuozzi.bsky.social How can one person suck so much? Youre the shame of Long Island. I hope ICE knocks on YOUR door without a warrant. Hell, a mask, a fake badge and I guess any citizen can show up at your door and pepper spray you in the face- this is what you support. Anti American crap.
